Product Description

Album Description

Formed in Bellshill, Lanarkshire in 1985, the group revolves around vocalist/composer Duglas Stewart. In 1986 BMX Bandits released their first single E102. The single was declared the worst record ever made by music tabloid Sounds, Duglas was delighted. The Duglas penned 1992 single, Serious Drugs, in contrast, was single of the week in both Melody Maker and N.M.E. and was voted as one of the top ten tracks of that year in magazines in America, Japan and Spain. Over the years their ever changing line up has featured many of Scotland’s finest musicians from bands that have gone onto to international fame and success. Oasis did their first ever tour supporting BMX Bandits and Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), a major Bandits fan, announced on New York City radio he wished he could be in a band like BMX Bandits.

Twenty years on from their first release the Bandits are still thriving with a new album My Chain being released in the UK June 2006 on Re-vola Records. My Chain is already been heralded by critics as the group’s best set yet. The group¹s newest member Rachel MacKenzie - the first female Bandit - has brought a new dimension to the group’s sound; her beautiful vocals have been compared to Carly Simon and Linda Ronstadt.

The band had a sell out tour of Japan in February 2006 and will be performing UK and international dates throughout the year.

Another fabulous NOW SOUND release from RevOla, as this classic cult band return for their Twentieth anniversary of poptastic action! A must for all followers of the burgeoning Glasgow music scene...and lovers of amazing pop music anywhere, anytime...

I read one review saying this album was like a mixture of Brian Wilson and Michel Legrand's music for The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. That seems a good place to start but there's a lot of other flavours here too: a bit of Ennio Morricone, a bit of Dinosaur Jnr, a bit of Jonathan Richman, Erik Satie, sea shanties and even a little Marvin Gaye. But more than all this, and despite wearing its influences on its sleeve it is very much one man's very individual voice that dominates this work- Duglas leader and main songwriter of BMX Bandits.

Anyone who knows BMX Bandits past recordings will know that Duglas is an incurable romantic and a very fine tunesmith but this record has romance and musicality on a whole new level. Every track leads beautifully into the next one telling a sad tale of love gone wrong but although it all fits together beautifully it's full of melodic and lyrical twists and turns you couldn't have seen coming.

The opener takes place in a Victorian landscape with cobbled streets, pirate ships and mistaken genders and then the next misleadingly cheery number, 4 minutess 22, tells of how the first song was written to create a fantasy world where love could live forever. After that there's more and more heartache but all of it delivered with perfectly balanced humour, melancholy and warmth. It's a concept album but not a pompous one. This is a tragic tale for sure but ultimately an uplifting one. In the album's final cut, The Bold Pirate Kerry, co-authored by Teenage Fanclub's Norman Blake, Duglas wishes his lost love well and hints he's still searching for a love that will heal his wounds as he refers back to an earlier track on the album, The Sailor's Song. It sounds complicated but it sounds natural and very real.

A very special album.

The above description tells you the bare history of this wonderfull band. Last years "at the hop" was a remarkable return after some years away. Long time member Francis Macdonald has left to concentrate on his record label/solo career and drumming for fellow Glaswegians The Teenage Fanclub. So what about this record ? Well if you ever liked the BMX Bandits this is yet another improvment David Scotts (the pearlfishers) addition is a masterstroke adding a lush late Beach Boys feel to the Bandits sound, and Rachel is a not only gorgous looking but sounds gorgous as well. and the songs ? well yes they are all up there wit the best of Duglas work as well.

Check it out , and if you ever get a chance to catch one of their rare gigs don't miss them.

Chains of Love 23 Mar 2006
By Chinosan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
When I heard that long time member Francis MacDonald was no longer involved in BMX Bandits I was worried. But now I find that I am surprised that this is already my favorite BMX album. There are more keyboards than guitars but Duglas (the leader of BMX Bandits) songs are beautiful, sad and sweet. The songs tell a story of lost love and although it is personal to Duglas it connects to anyone who has ever had their heart broken. Track two 4 minutes 22 is classic Bandits sunshine pop but with a sad lyric. Another favorite To A Flame sounds a little bit like Wire with Sonic Youth rehearsing in the next room. Cheese and Toast sounds like Erik Satie piano music with Cole Porter lyric. There is also a new version of The Sailor's Song which is now like gospel soul music with hammond organ. This is an album full of surprises but good surprises. This music has a big heart.

If you like Scottish pop (Teenage Fanclub, Belle & Sebastian, The Vaselines, The Pastels) you should like this, it is one of the best I've ever heard.
