5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely fun - learning - number book. 24 July 2013
By Mad Saint Uden TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This has gone down very well with my daughter who is a week shy of 5 and just finished reception year of school. It has had instant appeal unlike some other books which have been growers. The pictures are all very busy with lots to explore. I would say this can be a bit like a basic 'where's? Wally/Waldo' for finding Pip the only cat with a name badge on out off all the other cats.

So basically you have a short story which is fine - but you also have the addition that every flap (and there are a lot of flaps) has a question under it. These are counting questions like 'how may kitties are doing...'? or 'can you find the other...?'

It is about as sturdy as a lift the flap book can be (I'm sure some will get bent, but it's not flimsy at all).

I'm pleased that she is enjoying a book and that she is also counting. She is happy to have a fun interactive book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute cats, nice idea but not great as a paperback 18 July 2013
By Adam Bartleby VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
For context, I have a two year old daughter who insists on a minimum of three books at bedtime and is a dab hand at exploring lift-the-flap books 'allbaydame' (i.e. all by herself).

M really liked the simple, fun illustration of the central characters (i.e. lots of little black cats in costumes) but she didn't find the book all that engaging. For my money, I think this might be because it has tried to do too much with too little.

There are a lot of flaps, each with an activity printed behind them, but most of the activities seems to be about counting things on the page and that gets a bit repetitive, even for a two year old, after the first few dozen flaps. I also find that flap books don't work very well as paperbacks, perhaps because there isn't quite the same excitement with stuck-on flats of digging into a thick page to pop a flap open for the first time in hardbacks?

The cat concept here is sound, but for my daughter it would have worked better if it had gone for fewer, better thought out, flaps printed in a better quality edition, rather like Usborne Lift the Flap Word Book, which M has come back to again and again since we bought it 9 months ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intricate, busy drawings with plenty of flaps 27 July 2013
By Tim Roast VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is a flap book. There are over 50 flaps, 9 of which are on the first double page spread. Each scene has Pip the cat, always identifiable because of his circular Pip badge, amongst lots of similar looking black cats and kittens with big circular eyes and pink noses. Other animals with similar looks also appear.

Then there are the flaps which might be a look inside a cupboard or might change a kitten from being at the top of a slide to the bottom of the slide. Also inside the flaps are some tasks, say to count up something, or to find a number of objects in the picture, adding to the fun.

The flaps are well glued in and the back cover says that the book is not suitable for children under 36 months due to small parts. For this reason the flaps should stay in, and ours have so far, but if younger children with smaller fingers grab hold of it I don't know if that would be the case.

The scenes have plenty going on in them too. So overall this is very good, and can be seen again and again.

What a fabulous book. Large size with double page spreads featuring Pip the Cat in a variety of settings. Illustrations are funky, bright and packed with more than enough detail to hook younger children straight in.

What I enjoyed most was the interactive element of the book which had my granddaughter engrossed for ages. There are flaps all over the pages with each one showing a little illustration and asking a different type of question. The questions aren't too easy and require counting etc., for that reason I'd perhaps recommend Pip, Pip, Hooray for children aged 3 - 6.

There's a decent educational value to My Cat Pip but it's also a lot of fun and how nice it is to find a book with the balance just right. The whole concept is catchy, it works, my granddaughter hasn't tired of the book yet and asks me to read it for her almost every week.

Do I have a negative? Not really but I'd offer a word of caution; for an interactive book they've made the flaps quite flimsy and they'd be easy to damage so watch out if you have very young children.

A nice book which is brightly coloured and simple , with masses of cats and flaps to open with extra activities and questions behind each flap to enourage curiosity and help with counting and interaction.

My 4 year old niece loves it as she has a cat and likes all things catty .

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots to look at and lots of cats! 28 Nov 2013
By Becky P VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
My 4-year old daughter likes this book and lifting all the flaps and discovering all the little cats. Kids love lots of flaps to look under! I'm not really a fan of the computer-generated basic illustration - but that doesn't bother a 4-year old. Under each of the flaps is a question, along the lines of 'How many kittens are doing the washing up?' That's great, but it gets repetitive as the questions are all very similar. Sometimes there are really too many things for a young child to count, so I don't think the educational content has been thought out carefully. And sometimes the questions are confusing. So I now skip most of the questions and we just enjoy lifting the flaps.
