Product Description

Product Description

In this richly rewarding read, Sophie Masson gives us a year in the life of a young William Shakespeare, still living at home in Stratford, on the cusp of adult independence, as seen through the eyes of his younger brother Gil.
My Brother Will is as much an evocation of what it was like to be young and alive in Elizabethan England, where the medieval rituals and festivities of country life were still deeply embedded in the cycle and rhythms of the year, as it is about the character of the future playwright.
But published in the midst of a World Shakespeare Festival that runs from April to September 2012, the novel is sure to catch many a reader's eye, and we are confident that word about the pleasures to be found within will quickly spread.

A wonderful recreation of Elizabethan England, the story of 'My Brother Will' is told through the eyes of Gilbert Shakespeare, a boy at the cusp of adulthood, who loves his brother William but worries about his future, both with 'Annie Hathaway' and also regarding his brother's dreams of a life in the theatre, a life that must inevitably take him away from his family. The times are especially tense as the Shakespeare family are Catholics in an age when the Protestant religion is against all that sort of flummery and mummery. With beautifully rich prose, Sophie Masson describes the dynamics of a loving family and a close community set within glorious descriptions of the changing seasons with their attendant ancient rituals. Having made the acquaintance of the young Will Shakespeare (and his observant brother) I, for one, would like to continue their journey and find out more! Felicity Pulman. [...]
