Product Description

This book is from the inventor of TV's 'Vision On'.This is a stunning debut book from the multi-talented Wilf' Lunn, best remembered as the off-the-wall inventor in TV shows like 'Vision-on' and 'Jigsaw'. As a writer Wilf' has that laugh-out-loud observational humour that is reminiscent of Billy Connolly, Peter Kay and Victoria Wood.Wilf' writes with deadpan comic wit and insight about an unusual family and upbringing, managing to pack a huge cast of painfully funny characters into one book.Wilf' Lunn first came to public notice in 1942 when he won first prize in a 'War Baby' competition, which he believes was because he was shaped like a bomb. Raised by deaf parents in a cellar in Rastrick, Yorkshire, as a baby Wilf' quickly learned that f**ting was better than crying for attracting their attention.Reared on 'potted nanny', 'marrowfat pea muffs' and 'corporation pop', and in fear of the Brook Street Gang - who pushed drinking straws up frog's bums to inflate them like balloons - Wilf' survived (whilst marvelling at the adhesive power of dried snot) to fulfil his childhood ambition of having a beard. Many years later, the film star James Mason, advised Wilf' to write about his bizarre life. This is part of it...up to the age of eleven!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Laughed Till I Cried, 30 Jun 2008
This review is from: My Best Cellar: An Autobiography Up to the Age of Eleven...and Other Stuff (Paperback)
I'd forgotten about Wilf Lunn, thought he was dead - I think everyone of my age loved him when he was on Vision On and Jigsaw. What a great change from all the current misery memoirs! It's not often that you laugh out loud reading a biography (I think Bill Bryson's Thoughts From A Small Island was the only other), but this book had me crying with mirth not far into the first chapter. Even if you've never heard of Wilf Lunn, this book is definitely worth reading. He has a completely unique way of looking at the everyday world and growing up in the Fifties.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Best Cellar: An Autobiography Up to the Age of Eleven...and Other Stuff, 26 Mar 2010
This review is from: My Best Cellar: An Autobiography Up to the Age of Eleven...and Other Stuff (Paperback)
This will be my first review for Amazon, I simply had to share with you what has been the most interesting book I have ever read. Now, I have read many autobiographies over the years, many of them regarding famous comedians but never have I chuckled through a book as much as I have with "MY BEST CELLAR"!
Wilf's life up to the age of 11 told in a wonderfully warm way!
So, if Wilf Lunn's name stirs nostalgic memories for you, I recommend you to order a copy today. It's a genuine joy to read and I hope he will write a follow up!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not my fault I'm a science teacher with a beard!, 29 Dec 2009

This review is from: My Best Cellar: An Autobiography Up to the Age of Eleven...and Other Stuff (Paperback)
A charming and delightfully quirky read - brilliant! I remember Mr. Lunn's magnificent beard (it was his childhood ambition to have a beard) bristling away as he enthused about his latest invention on teatime television. Exclaiming at length the merits of his latest apparatus on Vision On - I blame Mr. Lunn for turning me into a Science Teacher (with a beard!)
The book has a lovely prose style, nostalgic photos and pleasant little sketches. I love the chart instructing the reader on how to make a snotrag rag, and a bobbin tank. I now know how to say "bugger off" in sign language! The idea on how to make St George's Square in Huddersfield look more Victorian was inspired!
Funny, whimsical and hugely entertaining. Mr. Lunn is a great eccentric (they all seem to be disappearing!) and a marvellous raconteur, there's a giggle on every page!
