5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Beautiful - Sparse Yet Intimate 1 April 2003
Format:Audio CD
From the get go this sounds like a special album. The title track is a delightful chunk of melodic minimalism, starting with the sparse plucking of a guitar before Christophers' major weapon comes in - an incredible voice that effortlessly jets into falsetto and never sounds lost in the songs. Eerily reminiscent then of, yes, you guessed it, Jeff Buckley. This has become something of a calling card for most singer-songwriters these days - they are either reminiscent of Jeff Buckley or Nick Drake - a shame really as it suggests the new breed has little to offer.
It is quite a refreshing relief then that whilst Christophers' is in some way similar to the emotional resonance of those two artists, there is something wholly modern about his sound. It may be the use of samplers and electronic buzzes and bleeps that occasionally seep through that provides this, in part this is certainly the case. Beyond that though, the sound that Christophers' is mastering is so uncompromisingly fresh that it can only be seen as modern. There is a great contrast at work here, something which is seen to extreme in the later work of Talk Talk and more recently Bed. That is the juxtaposition of minimalist, spacious notes and loud, blasting guitar - this being most clear between the tracks "My Beautiful Demon" and "Give Me Everything". Throughout this variation in style, Christophers' voice remains as delicate and startling giving some common ground between the two.
Thematically the album is concerned mainly with ideas of loss, love and hate, much in a similar vein to the majority of songwriters. Christophers', however, is an excellent songwriter who seems to understand the power of his voice and the right way to use it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elegant and beautiful songwriting 12 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Ben christophers is a true musical poet of our time. Ranked alongside jeff buckley, elliott smith and the kings of convenience. Beautiful demon is a work of songwriting genius. The amazing, and to be frank, entralling mix of acoustic and electric is stunning and worked pefectly; interwoven with a voice reminiscent of buckley but more pure, with an alomost choirboy sense of tone. The album itself is an impressive example of what christophers is capable of and has great variety - a sense of the elegant without once compromising the maturity at which his songs are pitched at.
Christophers is a jem. A complete jewel of a musician who will be able to keep writing album's that resonate with a dark passion and emotional genius.

Having been dragged along to see Ben Christophers perform at Glastonbury '00 to say I was pleasantly pleased was an understatement. For 60 minutes I sat in fear as my soul was musically educated in a way unknown since The Bends. On my return I purchased My Beautiful Demon and found it wasn't just the atmosphere of Glastonbury but this guy really does have a talent to make you think and feel. This album takes you on journey from beginning to end, a journey in which you find yourself and lose all others. Quite possibly one of the most disturbing but also most enjoyable albums ever...

4.0 out of 5 stars Beguiling 6 Jan 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Christophers will have trouble shaking off the inevitable Jeff Buckley comparisons with this album. It's true, his singing voice is rather reminiscent of the late genius', but don't let that fool you into shouting "rip-off" and move on. For the songs are impressive in their own right and the contrast between his voice and the warm acoustic guitars on one side, and the eerie computer noises and hisses on the other (a whiff of "OK Computer" in terms of sound) is strangely compelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars how the hell did this one slip by unnoticed? 23 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
from start to finnish (bar one track (no.7)beautiful demon is one of the greatest debut albums that i have ever heard. Drawing comparisons to radiohead but with the voice of Jeff Buckley on dope this album floats by like a night in front of the fire when you can hear the rain beat down on the window and the thunder crashing down. The album opens with the title track "my beautiful demon" and gently meanders on to the slightly heavier (but not much) "give me everything". This album has it all, the extreme depressions of daily life and the joys of waiting for the next day. you have to listen to "sunday" and you have to buy this album. buy it now!!!!!
