This book was tested out by my eight year old son and, judging from his reaction, I'd say that it was a success. He would have read the whole book in one sitting if that minor annoyance called bedtime hadn't got in the way...so instead it was read in two sessions after which he eagerly scrambled to the computer to check out the website!

The premise of this series of books is that a group of people called "SQ" are creating Great Breaks - changing history for their own benefit...which of course is generally detrimental to everyone else. The Hystorians are a secret society that attempt to fix these breaks and it is into this conflict that Dak and Sera unwittingly stumble when they come across the Infinity Ring. This book introduces the idea of SQ and the Hystorians and then concentrates on the kids' adventures as they attempt to fix the Great Break where Christopher Columbus, instead of discovering America, is thrown overboard in a mutiny.

I personally didn't find the characters all that believable, but my son thought that they were great and he was totally engrossed in the story. That's why it gets the five stars - because this book will be read by others his age and he loved it! I like the fact that, as well as being an exciting story, the book is also managing to sneak in some history. After reading it my son was busy telling me all about Christopher Columbus - great! I would think that this book is most appropriate for children aged around 9-14 years - mainly because of the pre-teen type of dialogue between the main characters - and might be a good one to try with more reluctant readers as each chapter is only a few pages long. As an added bonus, the game on the website, (you get a code within the book), seems pretty good and my son played on it for quite a while.

When asked if he'd read the next book in the series my son shouted "definitely!"...so I guess that's a thumbs up from us! Recommended.

The Infinity Ring - A Mutiny in Time introduces the reader to the three heroes of the series: Dak, Sera and Riq. Growing up in the present-day United States, natural disasters like tornadoes, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions have become an everyday occurrence. When Dak's parents invent a time travel advice and fail to return to the present after their inaugural trip, the children are kidnapped by a secret organisation, calling itself the Hystorians, sworn to save the world by rectifying Breaks in time - events that should not have happened and have changed history as a result - now causing the earth to fall apart; using the Infinity Ring will now give them the opportunity to do just that. But there's the SQ, a shady organisation after controlling the Ring for their own ends, who attack the Hystorians' headquarters, and Dak, Sera and young Hystorian Riq barely manage to escape into the past. To return home safely, they need to fix all the Breaks in history and thereby change the future.

This is an intriguing concept that will no doubt win many fans among older children. It is very well thought out, with an accompanying guide and website, where one can continue the adventure. As this is the first book in the series, it takes until p. 87 (nearly halfway) to establish the facts before the children can travel through time, so that the actual mission to resolve the Break felt quite rushed in my opinion.

I got this book for an 11yr old boy who absolutely loved it.

In infinity ring, Dak's parents are scientists but they are secretly developing a top secret device called the `infinity ring'. The ring gives the holder and anybody touching the ring the ability to time travel. This leads to a very exciting and tense adventure. The story has a really great pace and some very good twist and turns which will keep you gripped.

If you enjoy adventure stories, especially about time travel then you will love this book, my son liked it so much that I now already have the next book in the series from Amazon, called Infinity Ring- Divide and Conquer and he now can't wait to get the third book, The trap Door.

If you liked the 39 Clues books then this book is for you.

I would recommend the infinity ring series to any age above 7 right in to teens.
