Moral equivocation was a common trait among several of Marlon Brando's characters in the early part of his career, and so it makes good theoretical sense that he would play the role of Fletcher Christian, the tormented first mate aboard the British naval vessel Bounty
. But in fact the part is an ill fit for the actor, whose British accent is poor and who never looked quite right in period costume, anyway. Director Lewis Milestone (All Quiet On the Western Front
) makes a good-looking and at times (especially during scenes of shipboard cruelties and conflict) compelling movie out of the material, but overall the film just isn't there. --Tom Keogh
SYNOPSIS: 1787 - H.M.S. Bounty sets out on a journey that will take it through perilous seas to a tropical paradise... and into history as one of the most ill-fated vessels ever to sail for King and country. Lewis Gilbert (ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT) directed this colour-drenched spectacular, nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture. Filmed before in 1935 and again in 1984's 'THE BOUNTY', the gripping story centres on two men. Marlon Brando plays first officer Fletcher Christian as a dandy transformed into a man of action. Trevor Howard is Capt. William Bligh, uncompromising in his command or his cruelty. "Fear is [my] best weapon", Bligh proclaims. But it's also the most costly, driving men to desperation and mutiny. Richard Harris, High Griffith and Richard Haydn also star in this epic adventure.
