On April 20, 2001--the tenth anniversary of his tragic demise--a distinguished cast of musicians assembled at London’s Astoria Theatre to pay homage to the late, great Steve Marriott. Mustn’t Grumble features a selection of the night’s finest performances.
These 21 tracks span the career of the diminutive dynamo: from the maximum R&B, proto cockney Brit-pop and pastoral psychedelia of the Small Faces to the bluesy boogie of Humble Pie and his best-forgotten latter-day pub rock incarnation. Surviving Small Faces Ian McLagan (organ) and Kenney Jones (drums) are joined by such luminaries as; Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher,Peter Frampton and in truth it’s the Small Faces material that continues to impress and the better-known artists who provide the standouts. These include Weller’s rock & soul reading of the "Itchycoo Park" b-side "I’m Only Dreaming", Noel Gallagher’s slightly stumbling but fiery "Here Comes the Nice" and perhaps more surprising is Midge Ure’s bold acoustic version of "My Mind’s Eye" that prompts a jubilant audience sing-a-long.
Even the most heartfelt interpretations cannot truly compare with the timeless brilliance of The Small Faces originals, but as a reminder of Steve Marriott’s irrepressible genius this is a tribute that few can grumble with. --Chris King

If only the man could have been there.,

Throughout my growing years (and beyond!) Steve Marriott was the man. I never saw the original Small Faces (too young). But from then on, he and his chums dominated my listening. Then, just as he was getting it back together, he was gone. This concert was his mates' opportunity to recognise what he'd meant to them. And they didn't let him down. There are one or two duff tracks but on the whole Steve would have been made up with the end results. He would even have forgiven the occasional memory lapse on the lyrics...he did it himself often enough! For the artists featured it was clearly a labour of love. Technically for a live recording, the sound is second to none and the playing, particularly of the "house band", is a revelation. Standouts are Honey Boy Hickling's "Big Train"...always was better than Steve's versions anyway...and the final "All or nothing". Its great to hear Clempson and Frampton together. They have such different styles. Perhaps it's just me but I thought their interplay seemed a little restrained as though they were wary of blowing each other away. Too much mutual respect maybe.For fans this is a MUST BUY. For others, listen to the songs and soak in the love. To John Hellier, thanks.

I`ve owned this 'tribute' album for a couple of years now and I canhonestly say this class act of 'live' White Soul/R&B has improved mymusical scope for the better!The re-introduction to my ears of DennisGreaves, whose rendition of 'Phone Call Away' is one of the best tracks onMG, and the excellent vocal talents of the effervescent Steve Ellis [watchout for his latest album, 'A Sort of Innocence']has led me to go out andcollect more old Nine Below Zero & Love Affair/Ellis recordings. I alsohad to let the latter know how much I loved his performance, as heappeared initially with 'The Mods' and then just kept re-appearing,consistently hitting them notes. Great Stuff! It has led to a frequentonline communication between artist & fan - all starting from 'Musn`tGrumble! As a confirmed 'Wellerite', Pauls` performance at the end withNoel/Mac/Kenney was as good as he always is - I love the way he picks outthese "B-sides", 'I`m only Dreaming' being another highlight for me. Theonly small hiccup in this set was I`m not sure if they knew who wassinging what between them, however, this is only a very minor criticism &got sorted! The disappointment, for me anyway, was 'Humble Pie', but ifyou`re a fan of this particular group, dont worry `bout this as I neverliked them much, to me the Steve Marriott we know & love was purely theSmall Faces or latterly the Solo performer - sorry! Johns Children & TonyRivers didnt take hold of 2 classic songs 'Lazy Sunday' & 'Itchycoo', buthey, how many could? Its easy for me to overlook the couple of downersthough because of the excellence of the other performers, as well as thosealready mentioned was the beautifully soulful Debbie Bonham whobrilliantly attacked 'Groovy' & 'Black Coffee', the listenable SimonHickling with 'Big Train', Midge Ure was highly effective with theaccoustic 'My minds Eye' and Toby & Mollie Marriott, joined by MaxIreland, 'let go' pleasantly with '30 days in the hole' - a touchingmoment indeed! I recently attended Ronnie Lane`s Memorial at the R.A.H.- where Midge Ure, Dennis Greaves & Steve Ellis [why, oh why, only the 1song from Steve this time? - even if it was the class 'Afterglow'] sangthe same songs as on 'MG'. However, the night didnt seem as riveting or asexciting as the day for Steve Marriott - even with Paul Weller & PeteTownshend`s excellent performances! When I came on here, I wasnt expecting to do a review, but seeing therewere only 5 copies left[?] I must stress to anyone 'thinking' of buying'Musn`t Grumble' to go for it - You WILL NOT regret it! "We are themods, We are the mods, we are we are we are the mods" the crowd sings atthe end, Emotional? - So what!!!

Marriott was the man, and deserves to be remembered, but the fact that he was one of the best R&B vocalists this country's ever produced means anyone trying to do his songs justice is probably, with all the best intentions, going to struggle. Steve Ellis comes closest to hitting the notes, the best of his tracks being Song Of A Baker. Dennis Greaves, Simon "Honeyboy" Hickling, and Midge Ure all perform well. Both the tracks by Deborah Bonham are outstanding, in particular (If You Think You're) Groovy, which is easily the best thing on the album. The tracks by Weller/Gallagher/McLagen et al are good, but you'd expect better. As for Tony Rivers ripping the throat out of Itchycoo Park, the less said about it the better.Review in brief: Good Tracks - 18 out of 21. Best Track: (If You Think You're) Groovy, Deborah Bonham. Worst Track: Itchycoo Park, Tony Rivers. Worth buying? Yes, because the good tracks make up for the bad ones.
