Book Description

Aug 2005
First the USA Today bestselling novel. Then the big screen romantic comedy movie starring Diane Lane and John Cusack. Now MUST LOVE DOGS is a series and this is Book 1! "Voluptuous, sensuous, alluring and fun. Barely 40 DWF seeks special man to share starlit nights. Must love dogs." Life after divorce for Sarah Hurlihy consists of juggling her job as a preschool teacher and the demands of her interfering family. Then her bossy big sister decides to place a personal ad for her, and the wild ride begins. Sarah is about to meet her first date in more than a decade. She is scanning her neighborhood café for the man with a yellow rose. And find him she does, but he's the last person on the planet she expects to see…. "A hilariously original tale about dating and its place in a modern woman's life."—BookPage "Can another novel about a 40-year-old divorcee creating a new life for herself actually be of interest? Surprisingly, yes . . . this novel is a hoot."—The Boston Globe "Funny and pitch-perfect."—Chicago Tribune "This utterly charming second novel by Cook is a fun read, perfect for whiling away an afternoon on the beach."—Library Journal "'Eternally hopeful book reviewer seeks wildly witty novel on singles scene/personal ads. Stylish prose and sense of humor preferred. Looking for fun, not longterm entanglement. Must love readers.' Respondents to such an ad might include Claire Cook, whose new novel, Must Love Dogs, tells the story of a down-to-earth divorcee seeking companionship through the personals . . ."—USA Today "Cook dishes up plenty of charm." —San Francisco Chronicle "[A] laugh-out-loud novel, a light and lively read for anyone who has tried to re-enter the dating scene or tried to `fix up' somebody else."—Boston Herald "Claire Cook's "Must Love Dogs," a book that's got more giggles than soda bread has raisins."—Hartford Courant "[A] tart slice-of-the-single-life...breezy first-person narration...fast-paced"— Publishers Weekly "If Must Love Dogs is any indication of her talents, readers will hope that Claire Cook will be telling breezy summer stories from the South Shore of Massachusetts for seasons to come."—The Washington Post "Claire Cook's characters aren't rich or glamorous— they're physically imperfect, emotionally insecure, and deeply familiar. Must Love Dogs is a sweet, funny novel about first dates and second chances." —Tom Perrotta "This story is so delicious, so funny, so warm, that one engages on the first page and still wants more on the last. A truly joyful read." —Jeanne Ray "Reading Claire Cook's Must Love Dogs is like sitting down with a close friend -- a really entertaining close friend. Its heroine will strike a familiar chord in any woman who's been through a divorce, dusted herself off, and ventured back into the dating jungle. Funny and quirky and honest." —Jane Heller "Reading Must Love Dogs is like having lunch with your best friend -- fun, breezy and full of laughs." - Lorna Landvik "Can another novel about a 40-year-old divorcee creating a new life for herself actually be of interest? Surprisingly, yes . . . this novel is a hoot." —The Boston Globe "In an age when whiny novels about 30-something "singletons" whose sole goal in life seems to be snagging a decent man, Must Love Dogs is a refreshing antidote. . . .Reading about Sarah Hurlihy's travails is like talking to a comedic, self-deprecating friend. Cook's humor breezes through the pages as she details the perils—and perks—of plunging back into the dating scene." —Book Page

More About the Author

I wrote my first novel in my minivan at 45. At 50, I walked the red carpet at the Hollywood premiere of the adaptation of my second novel, MUST LOVE DOGS, starring Diane Lane and John Cusack. If you have a buried dream, trust me, it is NEVER too late! And I guess it's no surprise that reinvention is the overarching theme of my novels and my life. I like to think my novels have helped lots of women find their own next chapters, and I also take great joy in sharing what I've learned so far on my Reinvention and Writing pages at ClaireCook.com.

I'm the USA Today bestselling author of eleven novels, and I'm hard at work turning MUST LOVE DOGS into a series. Book 2 is called MUST LOVE DOGS: NEW LEASH ON LIFE and I can't wait for you to read it. My books have been called everything from romantic comedy to women's fiction to beach reads to chick lit. Honestly, it doesn't matter to me what you call them. I just hope you read and enjoy them!

Some of the nice things that have been said about my work: "The exuberant and charming Claire Cook is one of the sassiest and funniest creators of contemporary women's fiction," according to The Times-Picayune. People Magazine says my writing "goes down as easy as it sounds," Good Housekeeping calls it "laugh-out-loud," Redbook "gleefully quirky" and the Chicago Tribune "funny and pitch perfect." The Today Show featured me as a "Today's Woman."

Shelf Awareness said, "Claire Cook (Must Love Dogs) has build a brand writing light-hearted women's fiction blending kernels of the absurd and comedic in compulsively readable combinations." If that one wasn't so long, I might have considered getting it tattooed!

I've been a judge for the Family Circle magazine fiction contest, a finalist and a judge for the Thurber Prize for American Humor, and the Beach Read Festival fiction and grand prize winner. I've spoken at the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival, Cape Cod Writers Center, Savannah Book Festival, the California Women's Conference, and given keynotes at the Dress for Success International Conference, the Missouri Writers Guild Conference, and the Amelia Island Book Festival. My books have been translated into 14 languages.

I was born in Virginia, and lived for many years in Scituate, Massachusetts, a beach town between Boston and Cape Cod. My husband and I have recently moved to the suburbs of Atlanta to be closer to our two adult kids, who actually want us around again! I spend a lot of time hanging out on Facebook (http://facebook.com/ClaireCook), Twitter (http://twitter.com/ClaireCookwrite) and Pinterest (http://pinterest.com/ClaireCookwrite), and I hope you'll join me there! And don't forget to sign up for my newsletter (http://clairecook.com/newsletter/) so you stay in the loop about upcoming releases, as well as giveaways and insider extras.

I have the world's most fabulous readers and I'm forever grateful to you all for giving me the gift of this career. Midlife Rocks!

4.0 out of 5 stars good read 30 Dec 2012
By ElaineG TOP 50 REVIEWER

I picked this book up as a free download and whilst I have heard of the film have never seen it or know anything about it, so the story was completely fresh to me. I enjoyed it immensely, a light hearted fun story of a forty year old divorcee, Sarah, attempting to enter the dating world by placing a lonely hearts ad. There are some very funny moments in the book which has a host of larger than life characters, including some very cute kids who to be honest did seem a little too precocious for pre-schoolers. I liked the way the author kept the story moving with the three "candidates" who had replied to Sarah's ad, as I was never quite sure which one of them she was going to have a relationship with as the plot got quite twisty turny.

To sum up, a good romantic comedy which I enjoyed although I did find the ending to be rather abrupt and unsatisfying, almost as if a couple of chapters of the book were missing at the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant ... 17 Mar 2005

I really enjoyed this novel. The characterisation is brilliant, and I was sad to close the final page and leave the characters behind. Don't expect a complex, thrilling story, but if you're looking for a light-hearted romantic comedy, this is for you. Chic fic at its best. Can't wait to see the film.

3.0 out of 5 stars Easy reading 13 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a pretty easy, reasonably entertaining holiday read. I read it after Madame Bovary so its maybe not fair to compare this slight piece to one of the great novels about character but to be honest i could have done with a bit more here. I liked the central character but would have liked to know about her motivation and reason for acting as she does. There is one amusing set piece when all the characters in the book sort of collide which is well done. Everyone seems to dress really badly.
