Book Description

1 Nov 2010
Maureen Lipman has the knack of making the everyday supremely entertaining, the ordinary absurd and unexpected. This new collection of pieces sparkles with her inimitable prose and pithy opinions. Encounters in the street, at the hairdresser, in the dressing room, on her travels at home and abroad, indeed wherever she goes, are sharply observed, joyfully and - at times - ruefully recorded. Included too are a selection of brilliant monologues which capture the many voices of Maureen in wonderfully diverse ways.

`A lively variation on the usual memoir recipe' --Sunday Express 19/12

3.0 out of 5 stars What happened to the joy of life? 4 Jan 2011
By weaver
Format:Hardcover
A big disappointment after reading some of Maureen Lipman's earlier books. It seemed to lack the joy of life and sense of fun of those early ones, which had us in stitches on virtually every page. The book did give an interesting insight into Maureen's lifestyle and her opinions about various aspects of the world situation and someone who has not read the early ones might still find parts of the book enjoyable and funny.

5.0 out of 5 stars More of Maureen 9 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Maureen has long been a favourite of mine. Maureen tells it as it is, and I often wish I had said some of things she has written. Thought them but not had the courage (only to family). Maureen I believe has just brought out another book on Monologues so will be buying that next.

3.0 out of 5 stars Something of a disappointment 3 April 2011

I am a fan of Maureen Lipman and have read all her other books. This was very disappointing and not up to her usual standard. I particularly didn't like the monologues between each chapter and ended up skipping them half way through the book.

Short tales and insights to a very funny woman's life. Great to lighten your load, especially as a book you can put down and pick up without having to go back a few pages to remind yourself at the end of a hard day of what was going on when you left it. It made me laugh a lot.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable book, shame about the spelling 2 Dec 2012
Format:Paperback
I've just read this and two of Maureen's other books in quick succession - easy to do, because they're appealing and perceptive. I enjoy the author's almost stream-of-consciousness approach to memoir and she is consistently interesting. I admire her ability to sum people up in a well-turned phrase, and found myself empathising along on the things that peeve her. Her editors have let her down in that this book is littered with spelling howlers. Also some Lipman anecdotes get more than one airing across the three books I've read.
