Typical Rattle, measured, serene, emotional and well paced. It's a good performance and although on first hearing, seems to lack the thrust and fire of other versions, Rattle and the BPO win on conveying the musical 'sadness' but accompanies so much of Mussursky's music.

Highly recommended.

Although this is being fairly picky, Rattle doesn't quite bring out the excitement in this the way he should. Great Gate is almost painful once you hear what I mean.

Wins on Borodin 3 Jun 2011
Format:Audio CD
Rattle and the berliners is a safe combination. Rattle has a great sense for details and the Berliners have the right "chamber music" quality to deliver that. This recording has every little detail well exposed. But it gets a bit too controlled. The blood in the recording is a bit too cold. I would prefer a bit more "kick in the ass" feeling. It's very obvious in the "Great Gate of Kiev".
Borodin is not the standard repertoire, his 2nd symphony is worth this record all by its own.
