Biography

Steven Osborne is one of Britain’s foremost musicians, renowned for his idiomatic approach to a wide variety of repertoire from the mainstream classical works of Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms to the rarefied worlds of Messiaen, Tippett and Britten. He has won numerous awards and prizes including the 2009 Gramophone Award for his recording of Britten’s works for piano and orchestra, ... Read more in Amazon's Steven Osborne Store

Product Description

Steven Osborne has become one of the most valuable pianists recording today. His recent complete Rachmaninov Preludes release was critically acclaimed as the greatest modern version since Ashkenazy. Now he turns to further cornerstones of the Russian repertoire in this recording of Musorgsky's Pictures from an Exhibition (a work which has been in Osborne's concert repertoire for many years), and two sets of Prokofiev's miniatures. Musorgsky's masterpiece is one of the most popular programmatic works of the 19th century. Yet it is also a great pianistic challenge, with the spectacular textures of the climactic movement 'The Great Gate of Kiev' requiring the highest technical accomplishments.

David Fanning writes of Prokofiev's Visions fugitives: 'Prokofiev supplies snapshots of his most characteristic moods sometimes grotesque, sometimes incantatory and mystical, sometimes simply poetic, sometimes aggressively assertive, sometimes so delicately poised as to allow the performer and the listener to make up their own minds.' Osborne's subtle, yet brilliant use of colour and characterization makes him the ideal performer of this set. Sarcasms - as befits the title - is an experimental, provocative work, performed by Osborne with biting humour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterly Musorgsky 12 Feb 2014

Format:Audio CD
So many bizarre and not very helpful reviews of this disc - not sure why!
Steven Osborne is a thoughtful and compelling pianist. As he shows in both Pictures and the Prokofiev pieces, he has plenty of technique to spare, but what makes this recording special is its range and subtlety. In Pictures from an Exhibition he brings out the delicacy, with gorgeous sonorities, as well as the drama. Osborne is a great story-teller, which is just what this music needs.
The Prokofiev miniatures are also played with superbly vivid characterisation. With Steven Osborne you feel inside the music, drawn into it and held there.
This recording understandably won a Gramophone Award in 2013.
Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous Pictures 24 Feb 2014

Osborne seems to have success album after another. Now it's Russian time. This is Exhibition whose Pictures really does stop you and force watching them - as with the best Russian artists (incl. German-Russian Richter). If Vision Fugitives lacks some visionary vision in the hands of Osborne the disc is nevertheless an Album with a big A. Worth of listening to and of course purchasing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Osborne the master 12 Mar 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is another of the excellent performances by Steven Osborne. His touch and interpretation are, as ever, delicate and telling.
His maturity has developed and he is now a superb performer and whenever he is playing within range I go to hear him.
Well worth buying.
