Biography

RILEY LEE began playing the shakuhachi (bamboo flute) in Japan in 1971, studying with Chikuho Sakai until 1980, and has been a student of Katsuya Yokoyama since 1984. He was given the rank of Dai Shihan (grand master) in 1980.

I love this album. Getting two CDs for this price is fantastic.
CD1 is solo shakahuchi and CD2 is shakuhachi duets. The music on both CDs is slow and contemplative, ideal for meditation. Like Tony Scott's album, the music creates space and stillness within. There really is a "Zen" feel to this music. It is not in the least "New Age" or gimicky. I kind of miss the Koto accompaniments that are present on Riley Lee's other album "Satori" and on Tony Scott's album, but it's nice to have a change, otherwise all three albums would be quite similar.

Of all Riley Lee's shakuhachi recordings this is the most traditional. Lee's mastery of the genre is superb and the music provides the perfect accompaniment for meditation or tai chi as well as just sitting back, relaxing and enjoying.

I can't speak highly enough about Riley Lee's music. He is The Master! Several years ago I heard one minute clip on the internet from Riley Lee's CD. That was enough to transform my whole life and get me into studying of shakuhachi. I have been practicing yoga and martial arts since early 80's. Shakuhachi music became indispensable part of my daily practice.
I highly recommend these CDs!
