Product Description

Product Description

Madfish edition of 1996 album with 3 bonus tracks. Pendragon formed in 1978 and over the past 30-odd years have built up a fanatical fanbase around the world, releasing 8 albums along with countless EPs, live and mini-albums. The band returned in 2012 with their new album, Passion, which was hailed by Classic Rock Prog as 'an album that has both verve and real panache'. Passion was released on the new Madfish label (a division of Snapper Music) and Madfish are now in the process of releasing new editions of albums from throughout the band's back catalogue. This series continues with Masquerade Overture, the 1996 album that was originally released on the band's own Toff's Records. This new edition features 3 bonus tracks and is packaged in a slip case. The bonus tracks were originally released on the long deleted As Good As Gold EP.

To answer that question: sure it is, at least I think so. It is the culmination of the work on all the previous albums but now presented with such melodic vervour and passion that you simply can't avoid falling head over heels in love with it. The only weak spot on the album is The Pursuit Of Excellence on which Nick Barret surely overestimated his vocal abilities and range. Luckily it is a short one :-). But the rest of the album is simply put utterly gorgeous. Paintbox is one of the early higlights on the album which also shows that Pendragon is not a Nick Barret one-man show because just listen to the bassplaying by Peter Gee on that track. Not the virtuosic kind of stuff but very very melodic. The rest of album, except for that one below par short track, is of the highest level. Sure, Barrett is still channelling Genesis and especially Pink Floyd (on the closer of the album Master Of Illusion) but it never gets in the way of the overal feel and passion in the music.

But now, the bonustracks. Yes, the As Good As Gold EP was released prior to this album and as such they do seem to fit with this album except that most of the songs sonically and stylistically more seem to fit with the previous album The Window Of Life. But again, I can't complain really about them being here. What I do find utterly dumbfounding is the exclusion of a very special track that certainly should have been here: The King Of The Castle (The Shadow Part 2). This one was found on the additional disc of the original release of The Masquerade Overture (together with edited versions of As Good As Gold and Master Of Illusion and the tracks Schizo). The King Of The Castle is certainly their most overtly nod towards Genesis (Wind And Wuthering era) but I think it is a crime that it is nowhere to be found on this new reissue.

I've only been a Pendragon fan for 4 weeks so those who have followed them for 10 or more years might not appreciate my saying that I just don't like the newer style of Pure & Passion. Sure, I love the bits that remind me of the original Pendragon sound but not the heavier guitar work, the samples, the yodelling (why).
I've recently bought Window of Life, Not of This World, The Masquerade Overture and the totally brilliant 2008 Concerto Maximo (DVD & 2CD's).
Sorry whilst I fully understand why Pendragon would wish to develop a new style and try new stuff, it doesn't float my boat.
Just been listening to Passion on Spotify before switching to The Masquerade Overture (my copy is on the way to me).
6/3/2014 Listening to my copy now, lovely music, simple neo-prog (and all the better for it).

I am a late arrival to Pendragon's music, but will move heaven & earth to see them live. My introduction to the band's music came via Pure, an absolute cracker of an album, revitalsing the band's fan base. So, although I've kept up with each new issue, I hadnt gone back beyond Believe, which is a bridge between the 'old' and newer styles of Pure and Passion. When I read that Pendragon would be touring this albium, naturally I had to investigate. I hadnt appreciated that the album features Paintbox and the simply wonderful Masters Of Illusion, but also KIng of The Castle. THis is splendid stuff! Barrett was on a roll when he came up with the melodies and the guitar solos, which to my ears are amongst the best things he's wriiten. He gets excellent support from the rest of the band, Clive Nolan in particular on keys and backing vocals. Roll on May 2016, when I'll get to hear the whole thing live!

This is the fifth Pendragon album I have purchased. All five are excellent prog rock albums. However this one appears not to be quite so well produced as the others. The songs are as good as ever especially Masters of Illusion which is the stand out track on the album. The previous album World and the next two The Window of Life and Not of this World are brilliant with excellent production full of depth and complex musical arrangements with some stunning guitar solos. This album sits within this group of Pendragons golden era of music. Overall a good album with good songs which you would expect from Pendragon but perhaps we have been spoiled by the brilliance of the other albums mentioned and expect to much but the album just lacks that little bit more depth that the others have. If you are a prog rock fan then this album would make a very good addition to your collection.

From start to finish this album delivers the whole 9 yards of progtasticness.
The musicality of the band members, the melodies, it all adds up to putting a big smile on your face.
