Product Description

CD Description

Music is Painting in the Air is RVNG s second archival project following last year s acclaimed reissue of Harald Grosskopf s Synthesist. The first time Sensations Fix music has been made available on vinyl since the original, out of print releases. Music Is Painting In the Air is a collection of new mixes and unheard music from Sensations Fix s prolific output between 1974 and 1977. Revered as one of the great articulations of progressive music, Music Is Painting offers guide posts to those familiar with Sensations Fix s amorphous catalog and an approachable primer to those just journeying on the sensational trip. The story of Sensations Fix begins and never quite ends with Franco Falsini. Falsini, born in Florence, Italy in 1948, blazed a trail for home-recording that has impressed upon inward resourcing and reflecting musicians and DIY enthusiasts in the decades since. A technology stalwart, Falsini employed a floor model MiniMoog and a tricked-out Teac 4-track machine to transform the Virginia and Florence basements into cosmic conduits for Sensations Fix. The reach for space from a personal place is nowhere more apparent than on Fragments of Light, early basement recordings solicited by Falsini as deal demos and surprisingly flipped into the first of six Sensations Fix albums released in under 5 years. The up-close fidelity of Fragments creates a private quality that separates the album from other extravagant progressive rock productions contemporary to its 1974 release. After Fragments release, Falsini (re-located to Italy), alongside American expats drummer Keith Edwards and bassist Richard Ursillo, charged through another 2 Sensations Fix albums, Portable Madness in 74 and Finest Finger in 76, and a stunning solo album Cold Nose (Naso Fredo) in 75. Falsini and his band of psychedelic renegades left Italy for the golden shores of California, releasing Vision s Fugitive on an independent label and fulfilling their major label obligation shortly after with Boxes Paradise. In the years since, the clandestine spirit of Sensations Fix enabled a legend to grow. On his 2002 album, The Private Press, DJ Shadow sampled from 2 Sensations Fix songs. More recently, Sonic Youth curated a career retrospective titled Sensational Fix at Life Gallery. For Music is Painting in the Air, Falsini set forth on a year-long voyage to restore and revisit the original Sensations Fix analog tapes. The sequence is chronologically defiant, encouraging the listener to free associate the recurring themes origins and immerse in the body of music as a its own universe. Once this celestial body suit is occupied, it becomes apparent why the forwardthinking yet emotionally-accessible quality of Sensations Fix s music is still finding the universal audience for which its intended. Falsini s disregard for time and insistence on reinvention provides an infinite reach for his music. The end-goal was seemingly unmarketable by the industry then, but perfectly harmonious with a culture constantly evolving now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fix Mix 19 Sep 2012
By jPOW! - Published on Amazon.com

This is a fantastic collection. I had purchased the Progressive Italia gli Anni Universal music collections over the last few years, which was the only way to get Sensations' Fix albums on CD, but those sets were not cheap only being available as imports. This is a very affordable 2-CD introduction to the band, and the alternate mixes by Franco Falsini from original 1/4 tape (as indicated from detailed liner notes) for this collection are very definitive. I counted 12 Previously Unreleased tracks spread across the collection which should make it worth it for anyone who already owns the CD's or LP's. I truly hope another collection will surface someday, as listening to this makes me realize some of my favorite Sensations' tracks are not included within this anthology. I'll keep those choice cuts to myself for now so new listeners can make up their own mind.

This set is a serious contender for reissue of the year for me, alongside Can's Lost Tapes, Terje Rypdal's Odyssey In Studio & Concert, and the Durutti Column's Short Stories For Pauline. Very excited to own this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential for psych-rock aficionados 5 Oct 2012

As a longtime, obsessive collector of psychedelic music both past and present, I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit that this is my first experience with Italy's Sensations' Fix, other than a few Youtube clips here and there. I'd heard them name-dropped over the years by various artists, such as Thurston Moore and Anton Newcombe (Brian Jonestown Massacre), but their stuff was so rare that I'd just chalked them up as a band I'd most likely never get to hear properly.

'Music Is Painting in the Air'--which contains selections from five albums (plus a few outtakes), and some from main songwriter Franco Falsini's solo album--has changed all that. It's amazing to me the amount of ground it covers, from pure rock-based psychedelia, to Krautrock, to Brian Eno-esque ambient soundscapes, and a couple tracks that sound like forebears to the post-rock "scene" of the mid-late 90's, beating bands such as Tortoise and The Sea and Cake to the punch by 20 years. All of the songs require a decent set of headphones to fully appreciate the innerspace mini-journeys contained within. At times I couldn't tell if I was listening to a guitar freak-out, or insane synthesizer work, but in the end I just let myself go, to the point that I swear I was having little eyelid hallucinations during the more hypnotic numbers.

In other words, if you're someone who appreciates being taken on tripped-out headphone adventures, you could do much worse than 'Music Is Painting in the Air,' and it in fact may even blow your mind, especially considering how far ahead of their time they were, anticipating bands like Spacemen 3, Dungen, The Orb, Tame Impala, (Japan's) Ghost, and the aforementioned post-rock bands by a decade or more, with only a handful of instrumentals sounding really dated. There were a few tracks of more experimental tape loops and synth effects that I couldn't really get into, but overall I can't wait to hear Sensations' Fix's albums--and Falsini's solo work--in their entirety. In the meantime, this collection should keep me more than occupied for a long time to come. It's hard to ask for much more than that out of an introductory compilation.
5.0 out of 5 stars Finally. 1 May 2013

I can't believe someone finally made this available. I've loved Franco and his work since the 70's and its about time this music hit the masses.
You won't be disappointed.
