5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Rock Legends Charity Performance 19 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
In 1997 the Caribbean Island of Montserrat suffered a volcanic eruption, which made many islanders homeless. On the Island was Air Studious owned by Sir George Martin, who had produced The Beatles. During its twenty-year history, Air Studious had been used by many famous artists and it was to these people that Sir George turned to help the stricken people of Montserrat in order to raise a relief fund. The result was a concert in September 1997 at The Royal Albert Hall, London. The shows stars were rock Royalty, that in turn charted the history of Rock and Roll. Montserrat band 'Arrow' kicks of the show in energetic style, but when legendary Carl Perkins sings the classic 'Blue Suede Shoes' the night of high octane music really begins. Phil Collins, Sting, Elton John and Mark Knopfler contribute hugely enjoyable sets, sometimes sharing the same stage. Phil Collins gives 'In the Air Tonight' an airing accompanied on percussion by Ray Cooper who is highly frenetic at the best of times. Dire Straits front man and master guitarist provides a beautiful version of 'Brothers in Arms' complete with a string section, Sting joins him for the obligatory but enjoyable anthem 'Money For Nothing'. Sting performs a gentle, acoustic set with an interesting jazz influenzed 'Message in a Bottle' Elton John has a solo slot on Piano, with a moving version of 'Don't let the Sun Go Down on Me' amongst others. Mark Knopfler re-appears joining Eric Clapton for an acoustic 'Layla' followed by an all-star gathering for the guitar legends 'Same Old Blues' The supergroup line-up is only a rehearsal for the arrival of Paul McCartney performing at the Albert Hall for the first time in 30 years....

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Show! 20 Aug 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
This was the first DVD I ever bought, and it's still my favourite music DVD. This DVD really captures the atmosphere of the whole concert really well. Also the quality of both audio and video are outstanding!

But, that's not even the best part. The artists who perform on this stage are outstanding. Phil Collins starts with a very atmospheric version of "Take Me Home" followed by a very lively version of "Hot Hot Hot" by Arrow, with a noticabely good guitar solo. Jimmy Buffetts performance is definately a low point in this DVD, but not too low. From that song on the concert hits a hugely high level of brilliance that doesn't stop. Carl Perkins rendition of "Blue Suede Shoes" is brilliant, especially when you consider his age. Mark Knopfler's contribution is my favourite - "Brothers In Arms" performed with a full orchestra and then "Money For Nothing" played with Sting & Clapton - AWESOME! Sting then plays his part in his more recent jazz style. Elton John gives a great performance with just him and piano - really great! Then comes Eric Clapton with a solo piece, then the best ever acoustic version of "Layla" - just him and Mark Knopfler. Jools Holland then adds his piano virtuosity, along with Knopfler again, in "Same Old Blues" with reaches climax after climax. Paul McCartney then enters and performs solo, "Yesterday", with no flaws whatsoever. "Golden Slumbers" is great, especially when Mark, Paul and Eric trade solos right at the end - a real highlight. All artists then join in for a never ending version of "Hey Jude", with Elton and Sting taking a verse each, and a real rocking "Kansas City" with a solo from Carl, Jools and Eric. Wonderful!...

I have since heard afew songs that didn't get put on here, which is ashame as they were superbly performed, and Midge Ure doesn't get a mention at all - he just appears on stage right at the end. Another drawback is Jimmy Buffet's performance - a very average song, and he is completely outclassed by all the other artists. This should have been replaced Midge Ures unseen performance.

Apart from that - an absolutely fantastic DVD that any music lover should own! Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Music For Montserrat DVD [1997] 7 Nov 2007
Format:DVD
Absolutely brilliant!
You'll lose time with this one, the music/artists are incredible.
Starting off with Phil Collins, Arrow, (Carl Perkins, I didn't like his one and only song), followed by numerous songs from Mark Knopfler, Sting, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, then the finale with all on stage.
This is well worth having in your collection, you certainly won't be waisting any money here as the artists seemed to go that little bit further with their performances as they were raising money for the recent volcano eruption in Montserrat which destroyed the island and one of the worlds most popular recording studios.
Picture and sound quality is Eagle Vision perfect as all their DVD's are.
All I wished was the concert went longer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Music for Monserrat 28 Feb 2012
By MarkusG

I probably would have copied it from my mate, as it has the best Layla and best Sultan of Swing ever recorded in my opinion.
But it's for a good charity - so i forked out the small extra to buy legitimately. as it was it would have needed a double density DVD, so savings would have been minimal.
Worth every penny.
A show from the Royal Albert Hall with, amongst others Mark Knopfler, Paul McCartney, Sting, Elton John, Phil Collins, Jools Holland and numerous others all combining to make music for music's sake.
A great gig of great musicians. Don't do the charity out of money, buy a copy - it'll save you the time trying to undo the copy protection too!

Enjoy this one-off concert to help the homeless from Montserrat volcano eruption.
