An excellent recording of traditional Irish music in its favourite home, the Irish pub. Its raw and authentic with no production. The murmur of the crowd combined with the banter of the musicians makes you feel as if you were there. Magical moments that could never be captured in a recording studio.
A must have for all fans of folk music!!!!

Anyone looking for a cut-price, top-quality introduction to Irish music would do far better to buy this than one of those 'Rough Guide' type compilations. Unlike them, it has the sense of spontaneity, sociability and polished amateurism characteristic of the music at its best. Some of the contributors are well-known recording artists, others are not, but for all the key tenet is observed: no-one is bigger than the music.

It seems those involved went to great lengths to capture that 'session' feel, and they've succeeded as far as anyone is ever likely to succeed - not the wild intensity of the 'after dark' session, but the mellow joy of a few afternoon tunes over a pint of porter. Top notch.

I was lucky enough to stumble upon Matt Molloy's Bar in Westport by accident, and had a fantastic night drinking good Guinness whilst listening to the traditional music session. I have been back several times since and it has never disappointed. This album is a perfect reproduction of the atmosphere of live Irish traditional music played in an old fashioned bar. The music is certainly not bad quality, it just sounds as if you are in the crowd - close your eyes and you could nearly believe it. Check out Kilkelly and the Parting of Friends (the latter a a beautiful piece of flute playing by Matt Malloy). If you want a taste of Irish traditional as it really sounds, I recommend you buy this CD.
