Product Description

In nearly four decades as Master of the Music at York Minster, Francis Jackson became a leading figure in the world of church music and one of the foremost organ recitalists of his generation. Born in the early years of radio broadcasting, his ‘long while’ reaches into a tenth decade, having given his last organ recital in 2012 just after his 95th birthday.

He recalls his chorister days in the Minster under the redoutable Doctor Bairstow, charts the early development of his musical skills and tastes during the 1920s and ’30s and as a young soldier on active service during the second World War, and recounts the extraordinary sequence of events that led to his appointment as successor to Bairstow.

Jackson’s rich legacy of compositions continues to play a valued part in places of worship round the world. In this book his thoughts on the process of composition and the musical sensitivity needed in performance are revealed as the product of a lifetime’s experience; he has performed on probably more than 1000 organs, on three continents. He relates the events that made Widor’s Toccata a popular choice at weddings, and sent a hymn tune on its way round the world. Finally, he provides an illuminating insight into the stresses, politics and personalities behind daily life in one of Europe’s greatest cathedrals.

I loved Francis Jacksons autobiography as it gave a valuable insight into the world of classical music and this musicians love of the organ. I also enjoyed the personal reflections of family life with lovely photos of his family. Francis Jackson is a wonderful musician and the book was a joy to read.

As a young church organist growing up in Yorkshire in the late 1950's & 60's, Francis Jackson was a hero and no visit to York ( usually for trainspotting purposes !) was complete without a visit to the Minster for evensong. His recitals were a "must do" and the release of his LP records ( particularly the GCO Series No2 which I still have & treasure). So it was with some trepidation that I embarked on reading this book lest it dispelled the magic of those years !. Not a bit of it - he comes across as a surprisingly gentle and humble man, providing a fascinating insight to the life of a cathedral musician and virtuoso organist from the war years & across the latter half of the 20th C. It's a long read and to be frank I thought it rather petered out about 75% of the way through but I stuck with it and on the whole enjoyed it. A fantastic life well documented and so wonderful he is still with us ! Thank you Dr Jackson for inspiring me to play the Organ and providing me with so many memorable musical moments across 50 years.
