By C. FULLER TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
This brand new 40 track compilation has links to the USA television crime series Mad Men that has been on screen since 2007. The running times are CD1: approx 61 minutes & CD2: approx 60 minutes. Whilst the series is certainly not for everyone the music on this excellent Not Now 2 CD will entertain and with such an eclectic mix of performers and styles makes for an unusual selection. All of the classic vocal performers are here along with a mix of jazz and country performers. The sound quality is excellent and the liner notes by Michael Heatley set the scene for the music. Attractively packaged and great value this is sure to be a winner with fans of the show.Highlights for me are the Ella Fitzgerald performances Manhattan (1956) & Someone to Watch Over me (1959) and the strangely hypnotic "Gopher Mambo" from Yma Sumac and dating from 1954. It is also good to hear formative recordings from the likes of Johnny Mathis and all time favourites such as "Beyond the Sea" from Bobby Darin (1958).

The music in the series is a lot cooler than that of the CD. As a stand alone album for 60's music it's fine.

I admit I wasn't familiar with all the songs on this album, but having enjoyed the Mad Men series enormously I had hoped to be inspired by "Music that Inspired Mad Men".
I wasn't. For some reason, the magic of the TV series just isn't there. I know that's an unfair comment, but I was hoping for something special. There are some good tracks, but there are some real bummers too. "Music that Interested Mad Men" might be a more apt title for this collection.
