4.0 out of 5 stars An impressive first album 9 Dec 2008
Format:Audio CD
Music in My Soul [Us Import]

Hailing from the sunshine state of California, USA comes the smooth soul sound of Leigh Jones with her album release Music In My Soul.

This release from Leigh has a sound throughout that is definitely in the soul camp with jazz & R&B influences.

"Music" & the cover of Debarge's "All This Love" confirm the soulfulness of Ms Jones. "Cold In LA" lyrically delivers a strong story about the city. "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love" is a gospel sounding track that has a fine uplifting feel. The sound of "Have it Your Way" with its soft trumpet accompanies Leigh's voice well.

"Freefall" with its modern R&B feel and "Sick Of Fools" both with Leigh's stories of the ups & downs of relationships. Leigh vocal ability again is evident on the blues sounding, "Leaving You". The sound of smooth jazz on the album returns on "Same Game", "The Words You Never Say" and "Goodbye". "Who, What, Why" is a nice ballad.

According to Leigh's MySpace page she's already had positive support from the likes of Motown founder Berry Gordy & Stax records Al Bell. It's hardly surprising to see why, the comparisons to Teena Marie are bound to happen, but for a debut album, this a great start. Hopefully we'll hear more of Leigh Jones in 2009.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grammy written all over it! 19 Sep 2008
By Ray K - Published on
Format:Audio CD
This is quite a surprise. The tracks in this album range from jazzy to blues and modern soul. I haven't heard what another reviewer calls "REAL" music like this for quite a while. Ms. Jones' voice has this wide range and in that range turns to velvety tone or old style blues tone whenever she wants. There is no question in my mind that she will be one of the greatest of soul and R&B singers of her time. This one has Grammys written all over it! Can't wait for the next album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost, but not quite! 4 Dec 2008
By K. Ghorm - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Don't get me wrong, this album is good but it is not as great as I expected. As a huge fan of neo-soul as well as "Blue-Eyed Soul", I expected so much more from this debut. The first song that I heard from Leigh Jones was "Freefall," and hoped that the rest of her album would be as great and have a similar sound. She has great songs such as: "Who, What, Why," "Music" and a pretty good remake of "All This Love." With great neo-soul sounding tracks, I expected the rest of the album to be the same way, but instead there are a lot of bluesy/old-school jazzy tracks. Yes, they showed her range, but still left me wanting more contemporary-sounding tracks. All in all, its a good album and i'm excited to see what else Leigh Jones has up her sleeve!

2.0 out of 5 stars Wanted To Like This 25 Oct 2008
By James A. Dean - Published on
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Sorry folks, and I see I am the only one on here so far who doesn't like this release. Believe me, I wanted to, being the fan of soul that I am, but if this is soul, this isn't my kind of soul. Duffy and Adele take you back viscerally to the Motown-era. This release is pure formulaic. The backing band doesn't distinguish itself at all, it almost sounds like karaoke backing tracks. The song "Cold In LA" is quite possibly the worst song lyrically that I have heard this year. Ms. Jones does possess a nice voice and I think she could do better with better material and a better backing band. I know I am inviting a "0 out of 13 people found this review to be helpful" here, but I invite you to listen to any of these tracks and decide for yourself. I have--I'm reselling this on amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved It! 8 April 2010
By the lady poet - Published on
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I loved this album. I like how she genre-hopped. I like when an artist can do a mix of genres and not get boxed in. As a poet, I can appreciate creative people. I enjoyed this album, it had me wanting to write, the jazzy bluesy background was great. Simple and different. It was refreshing to hear a young singer not get caught up in the oversexualized, degrading singing. Like Ledisi, Chrisette Michelle, and Maysa, great vocals and music.
