Great book, very comprehensive coverage of every soul artist/group you can think of, with a nicely broad use of the term 'soul music'.
Runs to over 890 close typed but clear & readable pages, including a very useful index, 'style decriptions' plus several short but useful 'essays' on various types of soul music such as Motown, New Jack Swing and Reggae (I said the term 'soul' was applied broadly!)
Its a great book, once you start reading it you can't stop; it has brief but useable ratings of major albums & some background notes on each artist.
One thing to note is that for many artists featured the book is more about albums than the artists themselves, although a fair bit of info is packed into the introduction each artist gets.
Another point to mention is the book is copyright 2003 so don't look for any artists who broke after that year.
My only real complaint is the huge bias towards how artists fared in America.
Fair enough, its an American publication & there is good coverage of UK sales in some cases but massive gaps in others.
For example, the Drifters career continued in the UK with several major pop hits after they relocated here in the early 70s ("There Goes My First Love" "Like Sister & Brother" etc) but the book avoids any mention of these hits at all ending their career in 1972.
Still, the book is a great read & an essential purchase for soul fans everywhere!
100% recommended.
