Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Given his status as America's top male sex symbol, there's a perverse irony to Tom Cruise's virtually simmer-free performance in this would-be erotic thriller, Vanilla Sky, Cameron Crowe's remake of Spanish director Alejandro Amenábar's Abre los Ojos ("Open Your Eyes"). But ifCrowe stops just short of delivering another undercooked Tom turkey, his vaunted early years as boy-wonder rock writer--and the help of frequent collaborator Danny Bramson--informs the film with an exceptionally rich and eclectic pop-musicscore that leans heavily on unreconstructed psychedelia. Such was the Crowe-Bramson reputation that they secured original songs by no less than REM (the janglypop of "All the Right Friends") and Paul McCartney (a playfully obtuse title track that would otherwise be a stand-out on any modern Mac album), wrapping them in one sublime surprise, original and otherwise: Sigur Rós's hypnotic "Svefn-g-englar"; the gorgeous languor of "Have You Forgotten" by Red House Painters; star Cameron Diaz debuting as a singer (under the name Julianna Gianni) with Crowe and wife/film scorer/Heart guitarist Nancy Wilson in Wilson's equally dreamy "I Fall Apart"; the Monkees' psychedelic "Porpoise Song", Radiohead's "Everything in Its Right Place" and Jeff Buckley's "Last Goodbye". Constructed as the playlist of some strangely liberated FM broadcast that never was, this soundtrackis also a collection that proves that the best part of any turkey may well be the stuffing--sonic or otherwise.--Jerry McCulley

Excellent 12 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Like other reviewers, I was temped to buy this soundtrack a long time before I had seen 'Vanilla Sky'because of its amazing mixture of sounds. I was surprised and delighted by just how well Crowe matches every track so beautifully to every moment, building up rich layers of atmosphere and emotion. I would highly recommend both the film and the soundtrack, a warm and exquisitely rich experience to watch and hear.

I love Vanilla Sky. It got to me more than any other film. Mainly because of Tom Cruises performance. One thing that stood out for me is the music. How do they come up with some of this stuff? Like the film, the soundtrack is a beutifull masterpiece. For those of you wanting the song that is playing when David Aames jumps from the building at the end, this song is from Sigur Ros. It is from thier album called () and it is Untitled Song #4. This song is criminally missing from the soundtrack. Which is amazing because it has a massive impact combined with the scene itself. Get it on ITunes now.

Crowe knows his stuff 28 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Perhaps other reviewers may have been expecting Jerry Maguire 2 having seen Cruise and Crowe linked again, but this film and soundtrack prove otherwise. The film is outstanding, proving intelligent and, contrary to other opinions, showcasing one of Cruise's best performances in years. This soundtrack album, although missing a couple of songs found in the film, notably Radiohead's 'I Might Be Wrong', it does include all the important, dramatic songs. The idea of a companion soundtrack is to accompany a film, and this succeeds perfectly, especially if you have seen the film, as every piece of music brings back to mind images from one of the best and most original films of recent years.

Yeah, nothing wrong with this soundtrack but i would have to agree with the person who previously wrote that it offered little new if you are a reasonably 'seasoned' music fan. Read more
