O.C. Ost

Amazon.co.uk

Music from the OC Mix 1 is strangely unique for a TV soundtrack compilation. Often, US teen dramas don't put a great deal of thought into the show's music, relying heavily on bland, melodramatic MOR (think Paula Cole and Dawson's Creek). However, a glance through the track listing reveals a host of acclaimed indie guitar bands from around the world. Goodtime retro acts such as Jet ("Move On") and the Dandy Warhols ("We Used to be Friends") in addition to more downbeat artists such as Turin Brakes ("Rain City"), South ("Paint the Silence") and the Doves ("Caught By the Rain") make for an eclectic mix of new music. Music from the OC Mix 1 serves well as the soundtrack to a hit show but more importantly, it's a great introduction to good bands who many may not have been discovered without it. --David Trueman

I tend to buy, and judge, compilation albums on what I can learn from them. If there are a few bands I've heard of, and the rest is new I'll see potential for introductions to new things. I bought this album as a guilty pleasure, not expecting too much.
It's provided ample opportunity to wander through previously uncharted territory, not just stopping at those on the album but similar bands. It is clear that the people who put this compilation together know exactly what they are doing.
The compilation works as a whole, having something that caters for most emotions but not feeling disjointed. With each listen, I notice different songs depending on my mood. Joseph Arthur and Alexi Murdoch, in particular, offered some excellent songs. I have bought a few albums of the artists on the compilation, and discovered more artists through those albums, like Eastmountainsouth (Peter Adams plays on Alexi Murdoch's EP).
What began as a guilty pleasure has opened up a range of music, some of which hasn't had much (if any) UK release. Perhaps they are better known in America but a lot had the feel of undiscovered gems (Murdoch's was a debut). The Australians, Jet, may have been new to many, and Joseph Arthur, on the British Realworld label at the time, too. The more known bands, such as Finley Quaye and William Orbit, or Eels had lesser known tracks, so the whole thing was an accessible, uplifting and very interesting experience.
I think many people wouldn't have expected such a mainstream TV show to unearth so much interesting music and provoke interest beyond the bands on the compliation but they clearly know they're onto a good thing, since another three have been released. I hope this isn't overkill but so far very good. A great introduction to new music for me, and the ride is still going.

I love the show and when the DVD box set came out I decided to get this at the same time. I can tell you now that I have had more usage out of the CD than the DVD (not to say that the DVD isn't good - it is). There is something about the CD that I just love, you can sit, chill and listen. Even if you haven't watched the show you will definitely appreciate the music. If you do watch the show then the songs will definitely have more meaning as it will remind you of bits from the show.
All in all - a great album and I can't wait to listen to Mix 2 and 3!

Out of all the mixes, this is still the first, and best, of them all! I think the cd works because of the flow between tracks, and the mix of downbeat and upbeat music. The other mixes, excluding 3 as its a chrismukkah mix, have been a lot more downbeat and the tracks tend to blend into one another. My fave tracks from this cd are Spoon- 'Thats the way we get by' (i think this would make an excellent tv theme tune) and South-'Paint the silence' (beautiful title, even better song!) Highly recommended both to fans of The O.C and Indie music fans!

I'm a complete cynic about these soundtracks and never buy any of them but after being given this as a present for christmas I am definately going to buy Mix2. I especially like the dvd-rom which shows you the clips from the episodes that the music was in. It was a brilliant mix of music especially honey & the moon and Jem - Just a ride. A brilliant buy or present for any O.C. or non-O.C. fan.

On first listening i wasn't sure bout this CD, however it grows on u. Now i love it- it wakes me up every morning! If u were picking between this and Mix 2. This one is so much better despite being 4 songs shorter. Best songs include Honey and the Moon, Dice, and of course ' California'!
If you only buy one CD this christmas by OC Mix 1!

What can I say? If you haven't already bought this, what are you waiting for? This is the perfect summer soundtrack to suit your every need. It encompasses chilled out songs for lazy sunbathing days like 'Honey and the Moon', 'Dice' and 'Orange Sky', cool tracks like 'California', 'The Way We Get By' and the best track EVER, 'We Used To Be Friends'. You'll be jumping up and down, I guarantee. If you like the OC, you'll love this, and even if you're crazy enough not to be obsessed by the OC, this CD will convert you. Amazing.

A really good soundtrack, which is a given if youve ever watched the OC and thought, wow that music is great, cause all the best songs are on this great album. Full of guitar, rock and pop tracks to keep anyone entertained. Really worth getting. Cant wait to get mix 2!

Watching through the box sets of The OC, it quickly became evident that the creators had paid a great deal of attention to the music that was accompanying the episodes, so the mixes that they have produced to go with it soon caught my attention. They have done just as good a job with this, the first of 6 albums that were put out.

It contains the theme tune, California by Phantom Planet along with eleven other very good tracks by various indie bands with highlights (for me at least) of Just A Ride and Dice.

The album works very well on its own and as an introduction to the various artists if you haven't heard of them before. Highly recommended.
