This DVD runs for 93 minutes and consists of two separate concerts recorded by the BBC on the open-air stage in the grounds of Temple Newsam, Leeds. This is a spectacular setting and the filming captures it particularly well. Starting with the daylight build up caught in a few opening minutes, it really enhances the atmosphere of the concert by including long-distance shots which show the stage in its wider setting and the wonderful twilight as the sun falls and the darkening sky creates an evocative backdrop. This is particularly effective in the second of the two concerts. The camerawork for the performances on stage is also excellent.
The first concert, recorded in 2004, is 'Music from the Movies' and as well as Lesley herself includes several numbers from the excellent Ruthie Henshall and Michael McCarthy, either with Lesley or as solo items. There is also a production number 'Cabaret' that features all three of them together. In addition Lesley sings a wonderful performance of 'He was beautiful' from 'The Deer Hunter' and is joined by Anton Du Beke for a full dance sequence to a reprise of the music. It is in this and other controlled and beautiful performances that Lesley is at her best. Another great performance here is when she sings 'Moon River'.
This is a really lavish concert which lasts just under one hour and is musically and visually excellent. The music is played by the Orchestra of Opera North and there are backing dancers and singers and a full range of spectacular costumes. The visuals, both onstage and in post-production on the DVD, are also excellent, showing links to the films with which the songs are associated and many of the original song performers or film stars. This is a model of how this type of open-air concert should be staged and filmed. The sound track is excellent quality too in either Dolby digital 5.1 or DTS.
The second concert, recorded in 2003, is 'Music in the Park' lasts about 33 minutes and is on a less lavish scale but is still highly enjoyable and an excellent bonus to the main concert. Again this is largely performed by Lesley but she also has two guests, Maria Friedman and Graham Bickley. The songs are mostly from Broadway/West End musicals, and include an interesting pre-Susan Boyle performance of 'I Dreamed a Dream' by Lesley. It is interesting to compare Lesley's much more contained and gentle performance to the striking and dramatic performance which propelled Susan to global fame.
