Good Effort 14 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This was made by the one chap who was left after the other 2 left to work solely as Plaid. Bearing in mind the haemorraging of members, it is a good effort with interesting pieces, but it is too bitty and too patchy to be a classic.
Those new to Black Dog who want said classics should look to Bytes and Scanners first and not forget to check out Plaid's splendid output

So, here it is then, the so called 'difficult' third album for Warp (PUPCD2 for the trainspotters, not WARP-XX) by The Black Dog. Actually this is a Ken Downie solo release, but after his stunning comeback with 2005's 'Silenced' I think we can let him keep the weighty moniker for himself...

It's unclear how much of the material here was completed befroe the original IDM supergroup fractured from 3 to 1, but to produce something os this quality under such conditions is to be applauded...

Essentially, Music for Adverts is probably closest to Spanners in feel, which is not hugely surprising, but Downie does stray off a bit without Handley and Turner to offer their input. However, it's still a fantatsic example of mid-nineties IDM and deserves to be better respected...

I don't agree with saying this album is too bitty to be a classic, sure there are 26 tracks, some of them short but that's always been tBD's style and it's all done seamlessly anyway. I say just listen to the music and let it take you along for the ride...

Enjoy...

One of a kind home-listening dance music 9 Mar 2001
By "amoeba665" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Simply put, this album is indescribable. At first listen it may appear that some tracks are incomplete or amateurish, but after listening to the album from beginning to end a few times you begin to see that this album is really something more. The songs are short and sometimes only snippets, but the entire album flows wonderfully and each song still manages to be filled with emotion and imagination. Tribal and dance rhythms mix with weird scales and harmonies to create a new sort of techno world music. Vivid images are conjured up; ancient tribes, Egyptian gods and kings, long journeys... within this man lives the souls of millions of our ancestors, all channeled through a modern mind with modern technology into some of the most original, imaginative, and human electronic music I've ever heard. The songs merely pry open the insides of our minds long enough for us to catch a glimpse of the wonders inside, and then move on before we grow accustomed to them. His influences are many, but they do not seem to be drawn from other musicians, but rather from many cultures and out of a reverent respect for the world and an understanding of humanity's place in it. I guess that sounds pretty cheesy and maybe I'm reading something into this that you won't, but that's what his music does for me. As a whole, it's certainly not like any other techno I've heard, and I've heard a fair share. Some people may not like it, but I think it's a must-have for any open-minded music fan. I can't help but feel that this guy is in touch with something great.

Give me no roses 2 Mar 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
After being into Warp label artists for a long time, this album was the first grave disappointment for me. This is a very inconsistent and weird collection of sketches and snips that doesn't stand up to such great electronic listening albums as "Bytes", "Spanners", and "Parallel". It's an interesting idea, running in the same vein as Brian Eno's "Music for films I-III" series, but it comes out very boring. Not a complete failure, but concerning Black Dog's stunning discography, this album is barely more than filler.

superb 1 Oct 2000

I really didn't know what to expect when i was buying this album on recommendation a couple of years ago because it my was my first Black Dog album but i was thrilled the moment i heard it.This is an album of a man with an incredible imagination and talent. It makes you wonder "how does he do it?" at times like on a couple of warped oriental tracks (who cares about the titles!).He must have lived a looong time in Lebanon or Egypt or something (but apparently he didn't as far as i know).I know it because i am from that region. It soundtracked one of my most pleasurable period of my life and i still cannot keep myself from listening to it.This man's a genius and this album is a gem.
