When I was a child in the 1960s, growing up in the overcrowded hutongs, the maze of alleys and courtyards in the north-east of Beijing, people would always greet their friends and neighbours with the words 'Che fan le ma?' (Have you eaten?). Read the first page

a gentle memoir 17 Mar 2006
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
"Music, Food and Love" is a beautifully written and charming portrayal of the spirit of a boy expressing himself through music and food during troubled times.

This enjoyable and original book invites us into the overcrowded alley-ways and courtyards of Beijing where we share in the rich and warmly textured layers of family life, amid the chaos and confusion of the Cultural Revolution.

It is a delightful cameo of film-like image, tastes and sounds, painted in words which can be universally appreciated.

Intriguing mix 21 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This comprises approx 2/3 memoirs, followed by 1/3 recipes (which are referred to in the memoirs, so you get their context).

Reading about the Cultural Revolution through the eyes of a child and teenager is fascinating, but somehow it all feels a bit superficial. However, there are some lovely descriptions and good insights: one of the appeals of cooking being that it wasn't ideologically controlled.

Overall, the rather wooden style dilutes his passion for his subject and there are occasionally awkward musical metaphors, almost added as an afterthought - often the same one (the "percussive" sound of finely chopped food being added to hot oil).

But worth a read if you are interested in Chinese history and/or would like a different angle on basic Chinese cooking.

Used and loved 10 Oct 2010
By JudiH
Format:Hardcover
The book arrived looking as if it had been around the kitchen, in good condition but used and loved. A great book which looks at the interesting life of flautist and musician Guo Yue - we had seen him at WOMAD a few years ago, playing music, telling stories about jade and also cooking, so when I heard about the book I decided I had to have it. This copy was a proof, with a few pictures missing and a couple of errors, but it made it all the more interesting. I've finished the story part, now I'm going to try the recipes.
