Product Description

Product Description
It is now recognised that dyslexia affects people’s lives in all sorts of different ways. This book shows how some dyslexics can be highly gifted musicians. It is important, however, that they should not be put off from studying music just because – at least in the early stages – many of them find it difficult to read and remember the symbols of musical notation.

The foreword is by Baroness Mary Warnock. 10 of the 21 contributors to the book are themselves dyslexic. Each relates their personal experiences (whether as amateurs or professionals) and in most cases their eventual success. The other contributors are teachers or researchers who have wide experiences of dyslexic musicians of all ages.

The book’s message is one of optimism. Dyslexic musicians can succeed provided only that they are given sufficient encouragement and understanding.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Insight, 21 Feb 2003
By mrs H Lloyd (Johnstown, Wrexham United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I ordered this book as I am studying for the OCR diploma in dyslexia(I am a teacher). I found this book interesting and inspirational in learning a new area of study. This is the subject of the presentation I am giving to the group, and from trepidation,I have been astounded by the difficulties which musicians have to overcome, to follow and rise to the top of their craft. The book is well structured. At the beginning of the book the author gives an overview of the basic indicators of Dyslexia and its impact on everyday life. This means the book could be read by a beginner, or someone simply taking an interest in the subject. This is followed by inspiratioal and interesting case studies of dyslexic mus icians in varying fields of music, all have to overcome daunting stumbling blocks to achieve. There is also a section on a multisensory approach, which does assume some musical knowledge. Overall, an interesting, well structured and empathic book which could be read and enjoyed by a wide spectrum of readers.
