The first time around in the 60s I was too young, although a teenager, to appreciate the Monkees, but I did record some of their songs. The second time around for their tv show in the 80s I was a young woman, and watched every one, enjoying the madness and songs. The third time around, as a mum in the 90s I taped every show, just for the songs. When a special birthday came around, I wanted a tangible gift to myself, and this was it. It's all you'll need. Enjoy the beautiful haunting "Do not ask for Love" with harpsichord, which I had never heard, the silly, but great "Auntie Griselda" and many tracks with the unforgettable velvet voice of Mike Nesmith, whose base guitar is as beautiful as his voice. With nearly a hundred tracks no-one can say you didn't get your money's worth! And it's presented in a gorgeous book with loads of information and photos. Put it on, turn it up and revel!
It is now 6 1/2 years later and every time I put on one of these cds my daughter is used to me saying "I love my Monkees music box"! I didn't enjoy the later songs very much when I got this but I do now. I love the way horns were incorporated along the way, as they give a lovely smooth sound, and the sound evolved as they matured. I now have more favourites which I just repeat.
I never thought that Mike Nesmith got a fair bash at lead vocals, as I love his voice, but where he does it is absolute heaven! His guitar playing is also sublime. Listen to disc 4 track 6 "While I cry". and track 4 "I won't be the same without her".
So great being able to listen to snippets of tracks on Amazon, which is what got me to buy this. Thirty seconds of Davy singing "Look out here comes tomorrow" is all you need! One of the best things I have ever bought, and I am still in love with it. Yay!!
