"Music Box Dancer" was composed and recorded by the Canadian pianist, Frank Mills. It was inspired by an event in his life: his young daughter came to him with a broken music box. In it was a little dancer who popped up and spun around on a pedestal. Her arm was broken off; he mended it and, subsequently, named his composition after that little dancer of his daughter's music box.
The recording was first released in 1974 in Canada but it was not until 1978 that it became an international hit, when a single bearing the music was mistakenly sent to a Canadian radio station, CFRA-AM. The program director of the radio station took a liking to the music and added it to his play list. The piece caught fire in Canada and turned gold, which prompted Polydor, the record company, to release it in the U.S., where it became no. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1979. The theme of the music resembles that of a music box, with the piano playing in mostly high octaves, amid the accompaniments of other instruments. I find the tune joyous and uplifting.
