A very nice 3 CD compilation from the Sony vaults. Most of this collection is from various 1980's recordings and the 1999 Ives: An American Journey, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas previously released as single CDs, so if you already have those earlier CDs with the Concertgebouw, Chicago or San Francsico Symphonies, this will probably be duplication.
There are no tracks from Bernstein as mentioned in the description above. The only non Thomas conducted tracks are 2 tracks, "Robert Browing Overture" and "Fugue from Symphony 4" conducted by Leopold Stowkowski from the mid 1960's with the American Symphony, and Ormandy conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra on the "Variations on America" from 1968 to round out the set.
Nothing from "The Ives: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 4 / Hymns" CD from Sony has been used on this set and is a perfect compliment to fill out the collection.
The slim booklet has information with recording venues and dates of all the compositions and a short essay on Ives.
Part of Sony's American Composers series it provides a nice introduction to Michael Tilson Thomas conducting Ives with a couple bonus tracks from the vaults.
