Product Description

Product Description

This guide offers information on observing and identifying 150 of the most commonly encountered fungi species in Britain and Europe, all of which can be recognized without the use of a microscope. A concise description details the main features of each species, which is illustrated by a colour painting. The guide explains how fungi grow, what to look for in each family division and how to make a safe identification. Aimed at both the general reader and the amateur naturalist, this compact book can be used for home reference or as a pocket companion in the field.

I chose this guide on the strength of recommendations by others and am a little bit disappointed on this occasion.
I thought it had photos (my fault for not reading the reviews properly I think) but instead it has just coloured illustrations which is a shame. They are not the best I've come across either (some of the fungii I recognised but no way were they the sort of colours shown in this guide! - purple or bright green for a start) but for the price it's not bad but I wouldn't buy it again if I had the choice or really recommend it to anyone else.
For some families it says 'poisonous' or 'edible' and for others there is no guide - are these poisonous as well or what? - not that I'm a great wild fungii eater!
Better than nothing I would say to sum the guide up.

Very informative but would prefer to have 1st reference as common names ie. Fly Agaric rather than scientific name "Amanita Muscaria"

The best thing about this book is that it fits into your pocket, so really useful if out walking and you want to identify a mushroom or fungi on the way. Sometimes you can see something, but by the time you get back home you can forget just exactly what it looked like.

Has great pictures so that the different species can be identified really easily, so there is no fear of mistaking a 'deadly' mushroom for a 'safe, eatable' one.

Ideal for a homework or school project as the species are well described.

Really is a good little book and for not much money.
