Product Description

Product Description

When Emil Jadick barges into town with a crew of ex-con wingmen and a red-hot lady ready to help him break the place wide open, it seems that nothing can stand in his way. Nothing, that is, except a cop who plays the game in the same way that Jadick does - with no rules and no pity.

From the Back Cover

The first thing Emil Jaddick shoved through the country-club door was double barreled and loaded. The First thing he said to the poker players inside was - "Do I have your attention? We're robbin' you assholes ... any objections?" That's how Jadick came to St.Bruno. He had a killing crew of fellow ex-con wingmen and a sweet and red-hot sex machine named Wanda to help him do his down and dirty work. He had big plans and no pity. Only one thing could stop him - a cop who played by the same rules as Jadick ... None!

'The luxurious meander of Woodrell's prose is both beguiling and menacing.' Nick Kimberley, The Guardian

'Flamboyantly brutal dialogue catches the speed of lives lived at the rate of criminal tempo. Definately lives up to his rep.' I-D

'The colouful characters and the piquant tongues in which they speak really have us swooning ... all offer hot-breathed testimony to the human gumbo that boils in St.Bruno.' New York Times Book Review

'Woodrell is on teh cutting edge of mean ... a born writer. His style is both brutal and touched with poetry. And it's very much his own. Don't miss it.' Philadelphia Inquirer

'Faulknerian relationships, ripe dialogue and a dark, dim view of human nature ... as mean and dirty as they come.' Kirkus Reviews

'Daniel Woodrell is stone brilliant ... a bayou Dutch Leonard steeped in rich Louisiana language.' James Ellroy --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Pulp fiction convert 19 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
Trawling through Woodrell's back catelogue was a must-do following the majestic Winter's Bone (amazing book, rubbish film). It was fascinating to see his craft and confidence grow.

Yes, it's a bit macho and naff. Actually it's very macho and just a bit naff. But it's still an enjoyable guilty pleasure. 'The Ones You Do' is much much better but misses some of the macho pulp fiction naffness -- I never thought I'd see that at a plus (albeit in a very narrow context).

Five stars for variety from this otherwise snobby literature buff.

Tough, brash, great!!! 25 Sep 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is the third book by Woodrell which I've read and I plan to get to everything he's written. I love his use of language, his intelligent and accurate depiction of low and not-so-low life. With simple economy and smooth plotting, he unwinds stories which surprise us with their developments. I think he writes some of the best characters and paying attention to them and what they are saying and doing in the immediate action diverts us from seeing the motives behind all that. Kind of like real life. I like the Rene Shade character a lot and hope that Woodrell will keep him around for further adventures. This book is very well-written and I recommend it highly!

Juice Hardboiled Writing 14 Aug 2003
By Charles P. Stella - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Its lightning speed, raw, tenacious, exciting, sophisticated, witty, and some of the best crime writing Ive ever read. I started reading Muscle For The Wing at 2:40 p.m. and finished at 9:40 p.m., taking a few breaks to eat, walk, chain smoke a pack of Camels and smooch with the freckled one. Its 9:43 p.m. and Im hacking at the review, as in, Im still super-charged from this baby....

A Treasure 6 Oct 2009
By Rabid Reader - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I began my 'Daniel Woodrell' journey with "Winters Bone". A spectacular book. Next "Tomato Red" which I also loved.
I have now read four of Woodrells books and I cannot say enough about his writing skills, with each book he takes you on a most surprising journey to meet some of the most interesting, lovable and some not so lovable characters.
He is a master at what he does, no doubt about that. What is really a surprise, are how his books end, with a wonderful crash landing effect !You will not regret reading anything by Woodrell, and I sure hope he is writing away as I type this, because Daniel, I am going to run out of your books if you don't get a new one on the market soon !!!!
