The visual artistry of this film is stunning, wide shots of rural Japan which give a rich texture to the fine acting. However the story, so well known in Japan, is sadly not transferred to cinema in such a convincing way.
Understanding the sometimes 'Olympic jumps' within the story or characters behaviour requires a degree in media studies or the full reading of the book first. This is a good example of the 'chambara' genera of Japanese films. But I for one grow tired of this struggle to be pure, clean violence, with no blood, severed limbs or even scenes of agony; Kurosawa lampooned these films so well in Sanjuro, and compared any of Kurosawa's Black & White work, or Kobanashi’s thoughtful compositions, I find Inagaki's colourful drama a pale substitute.

A classic film from a classic book. Read the book if you can but you must also see the film. You'll never think of Musashi, Japan's greatest swordsman, again without picturing the equally great Toshiro Mifune. The film begins with the rebellious Musashi going off to war and glory, being reformed by a priest and eventually becoming the master of the sword through duels, battles, and a little thinking. Along the way is a tangled love triangle, implaccable bad guys, a fencing school with besmirched honour, and photography to fit the epic scale. Watch this and you will have to see the next part of the series, because you will want to know how the duel between Musashi and his equal turns out.

This is the first part of director Hiroshi Inagaki's Samurai trilogy, an adaptation of Eiji Yoshikawa magnificent 1000 page novel Musashi which sold over 120 million copies in Japan. It won the academy award for best foreign movie in 1954. It's filmed in glorious Eastmancolor and shot, for the most part in the japanese landscape. Set in 1600 A.D., in a civil war period, Musashi relates the first years of samurai apprenticeship of Takezo who, with his friend, Matahachi, decides to go to war in order to obtain fame.
If you decide to get this film you should really get all three films (Musashi, Duel at Ichijoji temple, & Duel at Ganryu Island) as they form a complete set.
