Book Description

From the author of "Tex Murphy and the Pandora Directive" and "Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon" comes the latest thrilling adventure in the series. Tex Murphy is an old-school P.I. living in the New San Francisco of 2043. He fancies himself hard-boiled, but is more like sunny-side up. He’s also been known to get fried, scrambled and poached.

He’s just solved the biggest case of his life (so far) and actually got paid for it. After a romantic dinner with the lovely and elusive Chelsee Bando, Tex is in love, out of debt and on top of the world. What could possibly go wrong?

When Tex wakes up, disoriented and head pounding, on the fire escape outside his office at the Ritz Hotel, he soon discovers that all his memories since that night with Chelsee have been erased. Years have passed and everything in Tex’s life has changed. Old friends are hostile. Former enemies are now allies. And Chelsee is gone…maybe forever.

Whoever did this could have given Tex a one-way ticket to zombie land by wiping his memory completely…but they didn’t. There was something specific they wanted him to forget. But what?

And who was behind it? The rival P.I. who was doing surveillance on Tex’s office and turns up murdered? One of the mysterious characters racing to find a priceless collection of Nikola Tesla’s documents and lost inventions? Or the shadowy organization that’s made a fortune in cryonics – freezing (and, rumor has it, reanimating) dead bodies?

Tex Murphy, the last of the old-school gumshoes, is on the case for himself this time. Motivated by lost love, revenge and the world’s strongest coffee blend, Tex will need every bit of his questionable social skills, relatively quick thinking, blind luck and the ol’ Murphy charm. Only by investigating his own past can Tex hope to regain his memory in time to solve the mysteries of the past and present and prevent a devastating future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book 18 Jun. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm a fan of the series but have to say this is a well thought out book and really enjoyable. You don't need to have read any of the other books to understand this one. It's a futuristic novel about a detective living in the past - typical film noir style but set in the future. The computer game that's based on the book is also good but this novel certainly gives a complete picture of how the story was intended to pan out. I'd definitely recommend it as a casual read and would happily buy more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars complements the game perfectly 2 Aug. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Have played the Tesla Effect game a couple of times now and in addition have viewed all the five alternate path endings posted on YouTube. Wanted to see if the novel gave any more background to the story and also which ending would play out. Was satisfied on all counts with the novel, and thoroughly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Extremely Useful Companion to the Game 10 Jun. 2014
By Lake K - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I don't like referring to this book (or any of the Tex Murphy novels) as nothing more than a companion for the games. However, it does seem likely that most people reading this review are interested in the comparison. This novel is definitely good on its own. (They all are.)

The novel's plot arc is much clearer than any of those in the game. The novel does not divide the story into conflicting paths, of course. Interestingly, the novel contains material from all of the game's paths, and has an ending completely unique from any of them. In fact, I think that a strong case can be made that this "hidden" ending is clearly superior to any of those seen in the game.

The story in general is very engaging, frequently more clear than the game's retelling, and raises some fascinating questions about where the story -- which is hopefully not over -- is going. The book very strongly implies an immediate sequel and makes it extremely clear what that sequel would likely be. The games contain far less clear foreshadowing of that same sequel, suggesting that that observation is relevant to both. (In that sense, the book really is a great companion to the game. After reading it, I rewatched a few cutscenes and caught these details for the first time.)

The only "negative" thing I have to say about the book is that it calls out a bit of a problem in how the game was executed. If Tex 7 is made, the games will presumably have to continue from one of the endings we were offered in Tex 6, none of which is entirely satisfactory. Seeing how that would be handled is something I hope to see done soon -- ideally this decade!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic novel, and the perfect continuation of a phenomenal adventure series! 13 Jun. 2014
By Mat Van Rhoon - Published on
I was introduced to the Tex Murphy series through the PC games, and subsequently found the novels shortly afterwards. As more of a visual person, I was very interested in what the books had to offer. From very early into the Under a Killing Moon novel, I became drawn into the universe Aaron had created! They expanded upon the stories featured in the game series, providing more intrigue and a more in-depth experience to the already well established Tex Murphy universe.

This new novel lives up to all previously established benchmarks for a Tex Murphy novel and then some! Aaron's true talent lies with his character development, pacing, as well as the scope and detail of the setting presented in his stories. My personal rule for judging a good story is how believable the universe is in which the story takes place, and Aaron seems to be able to nail this perfectly! Rarely is there a dull moment, and even in some of the quieter portions of the story you remain constantly engaged and interested in the lives of the protagonists who each offer their own motivations that contribute to a very intriguing plot.

While this is certainly one of the more complicated of the series in terms of overall story, it's not difficult to follow thanks to the novel's ability to draw you in so quickly. It's definitely hard to put down. The best part is not only the sheer scope of the story (spanning over 100 years of history, accurately represented), but also how these historical links play a fateful role in the personal life of the lead character. Combining this with the humor and atmosphere of an old detective novel and you have a recipe for success that will keep you turning pages until there are no more pages left to turn!

I would highly recommend this book to fans of film noir, detective stories, science fiction, scientific history, Nikola Tesla or even those who just love a good adventure!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read 12 Jun. 2014

Admittedly I have been a fan of the Tex Murphy games for twenty years. In my opinion they are the best adventure games of all time. The recently released Tesla Effect game did not disappoint, so I was delighted to see the book, written by Aaron Conners, as a complement to the game. Having positive memories of reading the previous Tex Murphy novels, Under A Killing Moon and The Pandora Directive, and really liking Aaron Conners writing style and dry humour, purchasing the Tesla Effect novel was a must.

The novel is somewhat different to the game, so it was worth reading to discover the true version of events. What's more It makes for a an exciting reading experience. It's a real page turner, with a fantastic plot and engrossing story.

It is not necessary to have played the game to enjoy this book. It stands on its own merits. Highly recommended to both Tex Murphy fans and anyone who enjoys noir detective fiction with a difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent novel - Dare I say, better than the game? 7 Jun. 2014

This is the novelization of the game 'Tesla Effect - A Tex Murphy Adventure'. And while it shares many similarities to it, it holds up on its own.

Tex is a man out of time, a P.I. who fits the 40's but lives in the year 2050. He wakes up bruised and realizes he is missing 7 years of his life, and the last memory he has is (spoiler alert for those who did not play Overseer) him and his date getting shot.

While I have played all the Tex Murphy Adventure games, up to and including Tesla, this is the first time I had read a novelization of a Tex Murphy game, so I did not know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised.

The book flows very well, following a lot of twists and turns, (some of which are in the game itself) but ultimately serves to provide a similar yet different story than the one in the game. It is very coherent, providing many answers to questions that I felt were unanswered in the game, as well as filling in some of the inconsistencies in the game itself.
Tex himself seems to be a bit darker in the book than he is in the games, but I still found myself chuckling to some of the new jokes in the book. Also, the supporting characters have bigger roles in the book than they did in the game, making it feel much more fleshed out.

My biggest gripe would be the fact that there is still a bigger story to be told (both in the past and in the future), so I'm hoping this is not the last we read of Tex.

To anyone who has played the game, this is a must read. Despite being a different experience than the game, many things will just 'click' once you read about them in the novel.
To those who have never played any Tex Murphy game, I'm certain you will enjoy the ride, it is a delight to read and no prior knowledge of the characters is needed to get sucked into the plot (I do recommend the games as well though, they are excellent).

Aaron Conners is a very gifted writer, and I do hope he writes more Tex novels (and I wouldn't mind a few more games either :) )

5.0 out of 5 stars Imagine Sam Spade being born a hundred years too late. 13 July 2014
By Fredrik Buer - Published on
Science fiction and noir detective stories are two genres that blend exceptionally well, and when penned by a masterful storyteller, can produce the most engaging of adventures. Enter Tex Murphy, a private eye of the old school. Who just happens to live in post-apocalyptic San Francisco. The setting itself feels very noir, not least because of the time reversal, where night is the new day and humanity has become nocturnal, hiding from the lethal radiation of the sun. Guess we shouldn't have unleashed all those nukes and evaporated the ozone layer during World War III.

It is clear Aaron Conners loves history. The way he manages to spin historical facts into a web of death, corruption, lies, delicious black coffee and that cigarette being lit in the dark in true detective fashion gives off a very Maltese Falcon feel. It's a testament to his dedication and skill that it's hard to see where historical facts end and fiction begins. And with Nikola Tesla involved, this becomes doubly true.

If you enjoy a good mystery, and you enjoy science fiction, (or you just happen to like dystopian futures, detective novels, and/or the strange aura surrounding Nikola Tesla and his inventions!) then this book is for you.
