Product Description

Product Description

Set in late 1890s Toronto, Murdoch Mysteries explores the intriguing world of William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson, Sue Thomas F.B. Eye), a handsome young detective using radical forensic techniques for the time, including fingerprinting and trace evidence, to solve some of the city's most gruesome murders. Though his unconventional approach elicits scepticism from his boss, Inspector Thomas Brackenreid (Thomas Craig, Coronation Street), Murdoch is often the only one who can crack the case.

Murdoch's small circle of confidantes includes pathologist Dr. Julia Ogden (Hélène Joy, Durham County), a staunch ally who shares the detective's fascination with forensic science, and Constable George Crabtree (Jonny Harris, Hatching, Matching and Dispatching), Murdoch's eager but inexperienced right- hand man. Both are valuable allies who help Murdoch solve his varied cases and traverse the many stratums of Victorian society.

Season five of the internationally acclaimed series finds Detective William Murdoch in the Yukon trying his luck as the Klondike Gold Rush winds down. In the wake of his personal and professional problems, Murdoch has left Toronto intent on starting a new life. But despite his suspension and Dr. Ogden's recent marriage to another man, Murdoch soon realizes that while he hoped to leave his shattered heart and tattered career back in Toronto, his days as a detective are not behind him.

Murdoch Mysteries is indeed excellent. It depicts such an interesting time in history with emerging technologies and methods of crime detection. Characters are excellent - a wonderful cast. In response to one review, this is not the end of the series. Series Six is showing now or finishing up and Series Seven has been ordered. Good news for Murdoch lovers!

After the shocks that ended Season 4, how could there be a Season 5? Fortunately scriptwriters have ingeniously come up trumps, creating thirteen more episodes to delight fans.

1899 in Toronto, with much speculation what the new century will bring. Det. Murdoch is already ahead of his times, revolutionary new methods used to catch miscreants. His boss Brackenreid (who played a blinder getting him back) is now more appreciative. As ever a "Sir!" from Constable George Crabtree usually heralds a major advance in the plots. Julia is still around, but her forensic duties taken over by Dr. Emily Grace.

The series continues to beguile. Toronto looks good. Cases intrigue. Murdoch himself remains courteous if a trifle aloof, crossing himself whenever seeing a corpse (which is often). Of particular interest are early glimpses of inventions now commonplace - especially in Ep.9. (Any viewer who deduces the identity of this killer has every reason to feel smug - the outcome a total surprise.) Inevitably some episodes are better than others, Murdoch's visit to the hereafter somewhat lacking credibility. In contrast, the time machine case was cleverly done.

Yannick Bisson, Thomas Craig and Jonny Harris have a chemistry which helps everything to work a treat.

The only worry, especially after how the last season ended, is whether fans are again destined for another devastating cliffhanger. Hopefully it will not spoil enjoyment if I reveal this is not so, the final few moments in fact more like a perfect end to the series. Many may believe all is now over, but another season follows. Truly the icing on the cake.

(Modest bonuses, these on Disc I. Be advised they contain scenes from later episodes, which may spoil enjoyment a little. Cast members briefly have a say. No prizes for guessing which of them when filming causes others to laugh when they should not.)

Recommended.

I do wonder why this hasn't been shown on ITV, it would be a great Sunday night drama. Season 5 has been watched in a day and a bit. I won't give away any of the plot devices or spoil it in any way, but after the first episode which features Murdoch solving a murder during the gold rush and his old colleagues managing without him everything soon ends up back where it should be and I'll be fair in that while its never ground breaking the series is still very well crafted, has some excellent storylines and good characters. This is as good as the previous seasons and I am already waiting for season 6 to come out on DVD.

Historically interesting, weaving good story lines, that permit a peek into the past as it may have been, while keeping characters full of life and engaging. A lovely escape without the risk of offending one's sensibilities!

The plots for each episode are so cleverly written, they keep you guess right to very end. This show is one that can be enjoyed by the entire family. I am really forward to series 6.
