3.0 out of 5 stars Falls apart towards the end 1 May 2014

For the most part this is a competently written detective novel about a serial murderer plying his business in a luxury hotel. The story hums along quite nicely until - dare I reveal - the investigating detective himself falls victim to the killer. After that, the plot, such as it is, meanders to a close: the killer is found, confesses, and is sentenced. But all this is padded out with large swathes of ruminations on the lines of 'what shall I do if', on illegal immigrant workers, the drug scene, and other topics, none of which really advance the plot.

The polt was interesting and I like the end, but somehow the characters never felt real so I didn't care what happened to them

1.0 out of 5 stars Dull! 14 May 2014

Quite a boring read. Almost like a bad episode of CSI. Can't grumble too much though, it was only 77p.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mr Kipling writes exceedingly bad books. 20 Jun. 2014

This may well be the worst book I have ever (partly) read.

It started off OK with a locked room murder, but within pages descended into badly written nonsense.

I kept reading for a while, thinking this must be a short story collection, each one about a different murder within the walls of the Metro Star hotel: there was certainly no way the story I was reading would sustain a full-length novel, so I might as well finish it.

When I realised I had begun flashing through the pages barely reading them, I thought I'd better take a quick look at the contents page to see how many pages of torture this had left to inflict before I could abandon the whole sorry mess. Then came the awful realisation that this was it; this rubbish wasn't stopping and I was only 17℅ through.

I skipped to the end just to see whodunnit, and was stunned to see things had actually got worse. Same terrible dialogue, but now seemingly written by a non-english speaker who had thrown their awfully written prose through a poor translation site.

I won't even mention the solution.

I don't give things one star, I like to think each has some merits. Not this. And I feel justified in my rating to balance the glowing 5 star reviews written in a suspiciously Kipling-esque style.

If this was free, it would still be overpriced.
