This is a book you can dip in and out of and pick the bits that appeal to you.
It is written by someone who obviously has an extensive knowledge of the area as the tales are dealt with in an interesting and informative way. For example, I knew nothing about Societies for the Prosecution of Felons - apparently one still exists in Eskdale - or that at the end of the 18th century, salt smuggling was a big, big problem on the North York Moors. And it also seems the area was rife with witches and body snatchers.
Some of the stories are light-hearted, while others are serious and heartrending. The writer relates many tales of unfortunate people who perished or disappeared in mysterious circumstances. Perhaps today, with modern methods of detection, many of these cases would have been resolved, but will DNA deprive us of any future mysteries?
If you like puzzles then this book will intrigue you.
