I felt that Mr. Jeffries was quite imagative in bringing Inspector Alvarez alive to his readers. I have read every Inspector Alvarez book so far. It was the close and comfortable feel of Alvarez and his distant (if) relatives where he resides. We truly get the native feel of the istand. Jeffries tries to paint a picture of the local food and people. We respect the natives and rather dislike the 99% of foreigners. I like it best when his Superior does not humiliate him to the point that it interferes with the solution of the mystery.
