5.0 out of 5 stars Shocking and Heartbreaking, 12 Jun 2009
Murder on Ward Four is an in-depth look at the crimes and times of nurse Beverly Allitt in the early 90's at Grantham Hospital in Lincolnshire. Despite not being a trained RSCN (Registered Sick Childrens Nurse) and barely qaulifying to be a nurse at all, she was employed on Ward Four due to catasprophic failures in the system. Allitt had an atrocious attendance record whilst training to be a nurse and showed signs of a personality disorder, particularly the need for attention and her continuous pathological lying. Tragically, at the time there was little effort to 'weed out' student nurses with problems like this and she was employed on Ward Four due to severe staff shortages. Within a matter of weeks, Allitt had taken the lives of numerous babies and young children, had attempted to take the lives of many more and in some cases left the surviving children so badly damaged that they will need care for the rest of their lives. This book explains the circumstances around those events highlighting the short-comings of a system that allowed this to happen whilst sensatively telling the stories of the parents who watched their children die in front of them in the very place they should have been the safest of all.
The second half of the book tells the story of Allitt growing up and how her Munchausen's syndrome, where she would deliberatly hurt herself, took a deadly turn into Munchausen's syndrome by proxy where she began hurting others for the attention that gave her, particularly when she then tried to save them. Incredibly, Allitt was asked to be one of the victims god parent which only serves to highlight the cunning and cruelty of this woman who dared to call herself a nurse.
With heartbraking interviews with the parents, relatives and other staff involved with Allitt, this is a must-have read for anybody, not least those (like myself) who are in the nursing and medical profession, so that we NEVER let anything like this happen again in our hospitals. The British public lost a lot of faith in it's nurses due to Allitt's actions in 1991. This book tells the nurses and doctor's stories as well and goes someway to restore the public's trust without apologising or making excuses for Beverly Allitt's recruitment or actions.
A well written, researched book which deals with one of the hardest subjects of all - the murder of babies and children by a person who was not only a woman, but a nurse, without resorting to 'journalise' or sensationalism in any way. A tragic story excellently told.
