Book Description

7 Jun 2012 Chronicles of Matthew Bartholomew (Book 18)

It is drawing near to the end of term, and the University at Cambridge is in turmoil over the opening of a new Common Library. There is an attack on one of the masters at a meeting to discuss the matter, and a body is found floating in the pond in the library's garden on the eve of its opening.

Meanwhile, there are rumours of a large force of dangerous smugglers lurking in the Fens. Aided by their friend Sheriff Tulyet, Bartholomew and Michael must thwart the invaders before the Feast of Corpus Christi the following week. To fail might mean the destruction of the town...

5.0 out of 5 stars Death stalks the scholars... 12 July 2012
By John TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I like the Bartholomew/Brother Michael series set in 14th century Cambridge and when I get the latest installment will usually set aside time to read it in a couple of sittings. Susanna Gregory is one of the few writers of the historical mystery/thriller genre whose ability to write complex and entertaining novels weaving in and out of historical events ranks amongst the best - Forrester/Harding/Doherty/Davis/Wishart/Peters/Jecks/Tremayne/Saylor/Marston/Knights, being some of the others.

Just back from intrigues and near death experiences in York, Dr B and Brother Michael are in line for more of the same as they are on the trail of the murderers of a number of scholars in the various colleges and hostels of Cambridge. Rather like Dexter's Inspector Morse is to death in modern day Oxford (you wonder who would live there with the expiry rate of the population through unnatural, albeit entertaining means, well above the national average), Dr B and Brother M are in the centre of a body count that if carried on would leave the town empty and it all appears to be over the fairly inocuous donation and foundation of a common library?!

There are several false trails, subplots and intrigues that mean the actual full explanation (as usual with SG) doesn't reveal itself until the last few pages and whilst some of it may be surmised from what's gone before the full explanation adds a couple of devious twists. Gregory paints a less than glamerous picture of the academics and religous of the times, painting them as thoroughly unpleasant; bigoted, prejudiced, scheming and self serving individuals who resort to violence and slander at the drop of a hat to achieve their ends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deaths in Cambridge 9 Sep 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Susanna Gregory writes very well of medieval Cambridge. She has developed an interesting cast of figures which she deploys as she writes of yet another murder. The death rate per hundred of population is not as high as the villages in the TV series 'Midsomer Murders', but it is getting that way. Her 18th in the series has a good story line.Murder By The Book (The Chronicles of Matthew Bartholomew)I look forward to the 19th.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value 22 April 2013

I cannot review the plot as this was bought as a gift. But it arrived quickly, was in perfect condition, well-packed, and for a fair price. I would buy from this seller again.

Up to Susanna's usual standard. A difficult plot to unravel and although I got near the truth the final denouement was still a surprise. Recommended to anyone who enjoys the medieval mysteries
