5.0 out of 5 stars You'd better hide it from your husband, 30 Jun 2003
I knew I would like this book, having enjoyed the first one in the series. (I had the paperback on order from Amazon as soon as the hardback came out.) But what I wasn't prepared for was my husband snaffling it. He found it in the bathroom and, after commenting that it was rather good, kept his nose in it until he had finished it.

This series of books has an almost Agatha Christie feel; a gentility threatened by dark forces. There is no stomach-churning blood and gore but there is plenty of stuff to qualify it for its place it in the 'Crime' category.

This is a book I would buy for a friend of my own age (30s) and for older relatives.

I'm looking forward to No.3 in the series coming out in paperback.

2.0 out of 5 stars elle quick mystery, 21 Jul 2004

My husband who is not a reader thought this book was very good and could not put it down. I am half way through this book it is like ploughing through a field of corn not knowing where you are going. I find the main character Elle so annoying. The author uses the word slacks for trousers, I have never heard anyone say slacks surely this dates back to the 60's. This book is hard going.

5.0 out of 5 stars Driven to suicide, 15 Feb 2008

The church organist, Nora, is having problems which threaten her health and her home. The writer of the poison pen letters which are flooding the neighbourhood is out to get her. Ellie tries to help her and sort out her problems, but even she can't work miracles. Nora is eventually driven over the edge - literally. This is a well written book with interesting characters. I can identify with Ellie, as I'm a similar age, and unlike another reviewer, I don't think the word slacks is a problem, and I remember my mother using it. In any case I would not slate a book for the use of one word! I enjoy this series and re-read them regularly. They belong in the cosy genre but they always have more than a touch of darkness. Not everything runs smoothly in Ellie's comfortable world.
