read a couple of reviews of this in the music press and must admit for once i was'nt disappointed.these old murder songs are actually quite hard to come by,if like me you love old blues/country and turn of the century folk music, blind lemon jefferson/leadbelly etc then you'll probably have a couple, but on this album every song comes to gloriously grisly end!! 2 personal highlights for me were "send me to the 'lectric chair" by bessie smith, the sort of female voice that simply does'nt exist anymore and "seven skeletons" by lord executor,a caribean approach to the murder ballad that most people think is a strictly american thing, i found this whole album really gripping stuff. trust me,listen to this loud,in the dark, and your mind will go to some strange places!!

Various Artists - Murder: Songs From The Dark Side Of The Soul (Trikont)
It's funny how some indie labels are so adept at compilations. Ace Records have always been very good, as were Loose and Bloodshot, before they settled into single artist releases, but for me, the current compo kings are Trikont. The oldest independent label in Germany has been around long enough to excel at the basics: reliable compilers with great access to material, excellent bi-lingual sleevenotes (they were originally a radical publishing house) and beautiful presentation.

Murder: Songs From The Dark Side Of The Soul, you'll be happy to hear, does just what it says on the tin. Primarily culled from early country, jazz, calypso and blues recordings, Sonny Boy Williamson (the brilliant "Your Funeral My Trial" - best song title ever?) rubs shoulders with yodeling Jimmie Rodgers ("Gamblin' Bar Room Blues 2"), who in turns enjoys the company of Ethel Waters (early big band singer), Louis Armstrong, Memphis Minnie, Billie Holiday, Lord Executor, etc. 23 tracks in total and not a duffer amongst them. 9/10.
