About the Author

Born in 1935 the eldest of two brothers and a sister Ron Knight was born in 1935 in Southend-on-Sea Essex. Father Ernest, a Chesterfield man, had finished a tour of duty with the Royal Artillery at Shoeburyness and married Florence a local girl in 1933. Staying local, in 1934 he found employment with Southend Corporation Electricity Dept. In 1940 WW2 had been going for a year and because of the risk of a German invasion the family were evacuated from the seaside town back to dad's birthplace. Ron spent forty four years of his working life with East Midlands Electricity working out of the Brampton Depot and retired in 1994.

Format: Paperback
I didn't realise that this was a self published book about the author's family history when I chose it. The facts have been gleaned over years of family history research using the usual sources plus newspapers. The presentation relies heavily on quotes from these sources. As the author states, he didn't choose to write the book - it chose him and for that reason it makes it a vaguely interesting local history book. The typeface however is too bold and the writing style disjointed and messy. Would have liked a modern map to show where the action took place in relation to todays town layout and I found the references to todays buildings with (2008) after them for reference - very annoying.
