A professor at the University of Edinburgh medical school where Doyle is a student, Bell is unconventional in his quest for knowledge and uses his skills of perception and observation to interpret events. He also believes that crimes can be solved in the same way as disease can be diagnosed if the same techniques are used. Having solved the murder of a young woman, Bell grants Doyle greater access to his research. This is also a time when women are being admitted to the Medical School for the first time and Doyle has become attracted to a fellow student, Elspeth Scott. Not all of the students and staff are as accepting as Doyle and someone is trying to frighten her and perhaps even do her harm. When Elpseth's sister Lady Sarah Carlisle takes ill, Doyle comes to believe that her husband Sir Henry Carlisle, a Member of Parliament, may in fact be behind some of the killings. The solution lies elsewhere however. ...Murder Rooms: Mysteries of the Real Sherlock Holmes - Complete Series - 5-DVD Set ( The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes / The Kingdom of Bones / The Patient's Eyes / The Photographer's Chair / The White Knight Stratagem ) ( Murder Rooms

Excellent Drama 20 July 2010

Exciting, interesting, compassionate drama based around the early life of Conan Doyle, the real-life author of the Sherlock Holmes stories. The series shows his (fictional) pre-Holmes adventures involving his mentor, an academic at the medical school (based on a real person). The stories are dramatic and pick up on elements that come into the Holmes tales, weaving new and rather original plots and creating a really excellent atmosphere of suspense and horror. The acting and direction are wonderful, too.

Much, much better than most offerings (novels/films/tv) written by 'other' writers (i.e. not Conan Doyle himself) and based around the Holmes concept. Being a bit of a fanatic, I admit I have read/seen many of these! This one is good and worth a look...

..if you can find it - I had trouble sourcing mine. I ordered from the US and this worked out well, but I hope very much that the DVDs become more freely available in the UK in the near future.

I loved this series on television and finally got around to buying it on DVD. There was only 1 seller available, and the service was excellent, however I am disappointed that I cannot seem to turn off the subtitles, which come in 4 different languages. I did not know that subtitles are sometimes cannot be turned off, and I must admit that it spoils the enjoyment somewhat. Such a shame that this is not made clear on the packaging.
