Book Description

25 Nov 2004
Shane O'Neill left the Los Angeles Police Department five years ago to pursue his dream of a career on the PGA® Tour. When a murder happens at the start of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am Tournament, the local police draft Shane to help secretly bodyguard the Number One Japanese golfer as they play together in the tournament.

Paired in the golf tournament with Julie McCoy, the tall leggy brunette heiress to the McCoy Golf fortune, Shane and Julie, with his caddie, Topflight, play their way around the three courses of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, protecting Tommy Toshiro while trying to solve the murder mystery. Yakusa Japanese gangsters, industrial espionage between golf equipment manufacturers; the tension of playing in a PGA Tournament, and the business aspects of golf tournaments and their sponsors add dramatic levels of intrigue to the story.

Golf, business, wine, women and fast cars, all set in the natural beauty of Pebble Beach, perched on cliffs overlooking the Pacific. What a great setting for a murder. A murder on the fairways.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like Golf...or Russ Coile...this book is for you! 13 Dec 2004

"Murder at Pebble Beach" is the only novel written by health futurist, and prolific author on health management issues, Russell C. Coile, Jr.

An avid amateur golfer, it was Russ' dream to write a series of murder mysteries where all the action happened on golf courses in the midst of PGA tournaments. He hoped his "Murder on the Fairways Series" would do for golfers what Dick Francis did for horse racing fans. Quick fun reads, lots of golf action, and the twists and turns of a murder mystery to keep things moving.

Unfortunately, before getting published, Russ was stricken with a brain tumor. Stage four. He passed away too quickly, in November, 2003.

The Memorial Home hosted a website where people could post comments about Russ and what he meant to them. 127 people wrote some truly incredible things about Russ. Wanting to preserve their thoughts for posterity on acid-free paper, their comments make up the front matter to "Murder at Pebble Beach."

Now, a year after his death, the book is in print. Both in paperback and hardcover. If you knew Russ, you can hear his voice resonating in the words on the page. His protagonist, Shane O'Neill is a self described "clothes horse" who likes good wine. Sound familiar?

Even if you didn't know Russ, "Murder at Pebble Beach" is a good read. The golf action is great. His description of Pebble Beach so accurate you can smell the salt air and hear the waves crashing on the rocks at the edge of the course. And the murder mystery keeps twisting unpredictably right up to the final page.

I hope you like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone 3 Mar 2005
By Xavier K. Maruyama - Published on Amazon.com
Murder at Pebble Beach appeals to the mystery fan, the aficionado of the ATT Pro-Am Tournament and the rest of us who are attracted to golf, business, wine, leggy women, fast cars, Japanese Yakuza, and industrial espionage. There are enough interests in this book that I'm sure that you are a nut about at least one of these categories.

Shane O'Neill is a former Los Angeles cop, who is pursuing a career on the PGA tour. He gets involved as a golf partner and body guard for Tommy Toshiro, the best Japanese golfer (sounds an awful lot like my cousin many times removed, Shigeki Maruyama). The plot takes unexpected twists and turns so that you don't know who is to be suspected for what until the very last chapter. Murder at Pebble Beach will keep you guessing.

I'm not a murder mystery fan nor a golfer, but the history and details concerning Pebble Beach and the Pro-Am Tournament were fascinating. As a Monterey Peninsula resident, I learned more about the tournament from this book than from reading the local papers.

4.0 out of 5 stars What a fun read. 16 Feb 2005
By Karen L. Kilheffer - Published on Amazon.com
This past week end was the perfect time to read this novel, the Pebble Beach Pro/Am was taking place for real. This book is a quick read and I'm only sorry there will not be a sequel. Now I will never know if Shane tells the truth and if he gets the girl.

Perfect gift for golfers or mystery fans or a combination of both.
