Book Description

3 Dec 2009 Exploits of Thomas Chaloner (Book 5)
The murder of a man in broad daylight on London Bridge is the first indication that the Earl of Clarendon's fears of a rebellion against the newly restored monarchy may be well-founded. His spy, Thomas Chaloner, suspects the assassin may be a member of a group dedicated to seeing the return of Puritanism, and at the same time he learns of a faction close to the King determined to bring back the old ways of the Roman Catholic Church. He discovers, too, that the killing on the Bridge is not the only assault committed there recently, and begins to decipher a link between the violence and the people who manage the Bridge and its tottering, ramshackle buildings. As he moves unobtrusively between White Hall, the elegant mansions along the Strand and the heaving congestion on the only river crossing he becomes aware of an undercurrent of restlessness in the capital. And it soon becomes clear that the groups he is investigating are planning some extraordinary climax to achieve their separate aims on Shrove Tuesday, which gives him very little time to identify the ring-leaders and thwart their intentions ...

Wonderful historical mystery series set in relatively uncommon timespan of Restoration London..
I love well researched historical mystery series with fairly decent main character. I take exception to reviewer who complained not all events and plot twists were explained at end of book. This is standard operating procedure for series writers who want their readers coming back to sequels.

I regularly buy used books through Amazon, and am absolutely thrilled with this one! I am an avid reader of these books, and am so pleased that I can buy these at such reasonable prices. The condition is used, but extremely good... no damage at all!
Very, very happy customer, thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read.
I am well hooked on the Chaloner series of thrillers. All stories based on historical fact. Real characters blended into very clever who done its.

3.0 out of 5 stars good but not great
I like the main character but the story was rather confusing and did not really add to the enjoyment of the read

1.0 out of 5 stars Dull, obvious style
The very amateurish writing put me off within two pages. No matter how carefully a plot is worked out, it simply cannot compensate for awkward cliche-ridden style. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book
Just as good as I expected from this author. It lives up to the previous books in this series. I cannot wait until her next Chaloner book.

2.0 out of 5 stars The idea was good but it fails to deliver.
The idea is good. Treachery abounds in restoration London. Without giving the story away too much, the hero has a few days to reveal and thwart a dastardly plot. However... Read more
