On the eve of the Spanish Civil War, murder has become so commonplace in Madrid that it passes almost unnoticed, but Inspector Paco Ruiz is not a man to look the other way when the body of a youn woman is discovered in Retiro Park. The case becomes personal right from the start, and Paco's fascination increases as time passes and no one comes forward to claim the body. Against a background of political turmoil - and despite threats to his own life - he follows the only real lead he has, a picture postcard of the Virgin Mary found in the dead girl's handbag.

A fascinating window on a lost era, & a good read too!,

This grips, the history is unusaual and beautifully done. The era was colourful and very different and largley ignored in fiction, so the background is richly fascinating. The mystery itself is good too, the principal character an excellent hardnosed Spanish gumshoe - too good not to have more about him, but where to go after the Spanish Civil War starts? So more please, I'm waiting.
