Product Description

MURDER IN MAUI: A Leila Kahana Mystery is an original eBook police procedural medical mystery novel set in the lush, deceptively idyllic tropical paradise of Hawaii.

Maui County homicide detective and composite sketch artist Leila Kahana is the protagonist. A Hawaiian native, Leila follows in the footsteps of her grandfather who was the County of Maui police chief. She is tough, smart, sexy, and outspoken.

Leila’s partner is Detective Sergeant Blake Seymour, separated from his wife and pushing to make lieutenant.

Leila and Seymour investigate the execution-style murder of two prominent doctors in an upscale condominium. Larry Nagasaka and Elizabeth Racine are found lying naked in bed in a pool of their own blood. It is learned that they are married, but not to each other, and that the doctors belong to a prestigious medical association.

Assisting the detectives in the case are fellow members of the homicide squad, Detectives Trent Ferguson and Rachel Lancaster, run by Lieutenant Paul Ortega who is contemplating retirement. As they interview suspects and collect evidence, more doctors belonging to the medical association are murdered, making it clear to all that they have a ruthless and determined serial killer on their hands.

Leila, attempting to step out of the shadow of her grandfather and prove her worth to a skeptical Polynesian mother, is determined to solve this case, made more difficult as all the victims have skeletons in their closets.

Leila’s romantic involvement with Seymour--in spite of her conservative upbringing and the fact that he still pines for his soon-to-be ex-wife--complicates matters.

What sets this series apart--aside from the lush setting of Maui and its distinct areas that are prominent in the book such as Wailuku, Lahaina, Kihei, and Napili--are the colorful, main characters as they painstakingly go through the process of stopping a ruthless killer, with everyone a suspect.

1.0 out of 5 stars Murder In (!) Maui, or maybe in Milan, or... 8 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
... on Mykonos, perhaps???

The author of this highly appraised (by colleagues and friends, I suppose...) failure didn't even make a difference between an island or a city or a state - using "in" in the title.
Where an "on" would be much more appropriate!
There is nothing about this miserable "mystery" that makes us readers think that all those shambles take place ON an Hawai'ian Island! One of the most distictive places in the whole world - the Island of Maui.

If I may quote the very able co-reviewer "newhere":
>>References to any Maui locations were so general and non descriptive, the book could have been written by someone only using a map. No sunsets? No views of Molokai or Lanai? No nighttime nude swimming at McKenna beach? At what bar did Leila meet her friend? Was the art gallery on Front Street or in the lobby of a hotel? What music played in the background at the art exhibition? Leila takes a morning run on the beach. That's it? The sun isn't dawning on the west Maui mountains and Haleakala doesn't rise majestically 10,000 ft above her crowned by lavender morning clouds? <<
And "newhere" doesn't pretend to be a writer! Compliments to You then, newhere!

I can only add that all the times I had the luck to be in those fabulous waters on those immensely impressing islands, I NEVER met a girl/woman named Leila - in Finland and Norway and Sweden there come 13 on a dozen! But there may be a first time for that, too...

To tell much about the story means to give the book too much attention.
Murder of adulterers, a wishy-washy investigation, detectives with their heads elsewhere - I write "heads" intentinally because "brains" - I don't know if there are some provided by the author...
And that lame love-or-what-You-wanna-call-it story with the "he" absent and the "she" likewise. The "he" is with his Wifie who left him because he cheated on her before, and the "she" is calculating if the "he" is finally Mr Right...

Oh - gimme a break!
Make a soap opera out of it!
A total waste of time and money!
I want my 4,75 Euro back!

1.0 out of 5 stars Dry and unoriginal 14 Jun 2011

If the author wishes to construct a series out of this character, some major changes will be necessary - or the author should keep their day job. I have a policy of not quitting on a book, but It was like reading someone's notes while they were watching a TV sitcom.
There is the stale plot line of male-female police partners giving in to their sexual attraction, but (even more predictable) -one of them is in the middle of a divorce and the other cannot seem to have lasting, meaningful relationships because of her career. <yawn> Even their obligatory sex scenes felt like the author was distancing themselves and uncomfortable......."he-put-it-in-her-she-arched-her-back-talk-about-the-case-in-bed-the-phone-rings-back-to-work." The author just had no ability to get the reader to care about these characters.
Most surprising was the lack of any effort to take advantage of the locale. Although the author mentions the Maui towns by name, the book's setting could have been In any city. Oh wait - the ocean was mentioned perhaps three times, so we will change the comparison to any city on any coast.
I don't pretend to be a writer, but how can a
book possibly be so stale when surrounded with so much to work with? If words paint a picture for the reader, this is merely an
elementary sketch. NOTE: The author chose to reply to my review in a somewhat snarky, defensive manner. I never questioned the investigative procedures reflected in the book and was remiss in not crediting the authenticity of those procedures. I do hold a degree in Criminology, so it did not surprise me that the author has a respected history of writing textbooks. That explains a lot regarding [what i observed as a] dry writing style.

This is good series. Well written although she did make a few mistakes about local culture in the first book. However, the rest of the series corrected her mistakes and I liked thte local flavor. She is a good writer and the story is exciting and keeps your attention. I did read the author's other books after reading her first.
