More About the Author

Veronica Heley (www.veronicaheley.com) has published more than sixty books, including crime fiction, historical, and children's titles. She is currently involved in the Ellie Quicke series of crime stories and a variety of other projects. A full-time writer, she has been married to a London probation officer since 1964, and has one musician daughter.

I enjoy giving talks and workshops about writing, and served time on the committee of the Association of Christian Writers. I attend Pitshanger Methodist Church, run their bookstall and am a member of their prayer group. I've been married to a probation officer for forty something years, and we have one married, musician daughter.

For fun I read anything and everything. I've been a member of a book reading club for forty years. I enjoy meeting friends for coffee, I garden, I play patience with real cards ... and think about stories I haven't yet had time to write.

5.0 out of 5 stars Murder by Bicycle 18 Feb 2008
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Ellie Quicke is accused of poisoning several members of the church's congregation when people become ill after apparently eating her home made quiches. She is positive there was nothing wrong with her quiches but when an elderly man dies and a young woman miscarries her baby the situation becomes serious and Ellie has a fight on her hands to clear her name.

Once again, family and friends are making excessive demands on Ellie's time and patience but fortunately Thomas, the vicar is doing his best to support Ellie but various busy bodies starting rumours about them? I enjoyed this complex mystery which has plenty of clues and read herrings to lure the unwary reader to draw the wrong conclusions. It demonstrates how groups of people can come to incorrect conclusions when they don't have all the facts at their disposal.

I love the dialogue in this series and the characters are believable and likeable. Even Ellie and Thomas are all too human and don't always behave exactly how they should. This series bears re-reading more than once and the books are still as fresh after more than one reading. The series can be read in any order.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Wonderful Elle Quicke returns! 31 Dec 2006
By PageTurner - Published on Amazon.com
I loved this book, and in fact, love the entire series of Elle Quicke books. The heroine is marvelous, a real woman, with a real, sometimes annoying family, and a host of entertaining villagers. Elle Quicke seems like someone I would enjoy knowing, and I have a lot of fun with her in this warm, amusing, very entertaining series. I also love the fact that dear Elle is over 40, because I get tired of reading about 20 and 30 year-olds!
4.0 out of 5 stars Love reading series books 16 July 2010

I purchased this book because it was missing from my local library and I really do enjoy reading books that are a series. (I donated it to them when I finished) It's a fun murder mystery. The characters are endearing. The author covers her bases really well. Read it for fun because of course noone in their entire lifetime could have this many murders happen in one area. Hopefully, not.

2.0 out of 5 stars Took time but this is better 3 Nov 2006

This is book 6 or 7 in the series and finally the heroine has some guts!

I'm an anglophile so not used to heroines being this passive, even little old ladies. I have had to wait this long to really like the main charater, Ellie. I am surprised she is very popular in England, or maybe that is just the paid-for publicity reviews.

I am done with this series, won't waste my time or money again.

I did enjoy this story and am beginning to like most of the other characters, but there are other series out there much more enjoyable and worth the money.

This series is not a keeper for me. I have donated the 2 I've read to our local library.

Some of my book club friends didn't even want this book after reading a previous Ellie novel.
