Amazon.co.uk Review

Kermit takes centre stage in A Very Muppet Christmas Movie, a hilarious, parody-laden celebration of muppetry, pulsating with original music, a star-studded cast of human cameos, and a heartwarming story reminiscent of It's a Wonderful Life. Joan Cusack plays the deliciously villainous Miss Bitterman, a ruthless banker who succeeds in foreclosing on the Muppet Theatre only days before Kermit's Christmas extravaganza. As Kermit loses his livelihood, he plunges into the "I wish I'd never been born" mind-set instantly recognisable to George Bailey fans. It's going to take some divine intervention (Whoopi Goldberg is cast as God, no less), plus a little help from a heavenly "Clarence". Despite some moments where the script seems adrift and some humour that borders on the risqué, Fozzie and the gang are in fine form. The message is sweet: dreams are as vital to life as loyal friendships are to see them through. --Lynn Gibson

Synopsis

The Muppets are back! This smart, funny holiday film is family entertainment at its finest. Join the regular cast of characters, including some new faces, as they rediscover the joy of friendship as they try to raise money by putting on a Christmas show to save their precious theatre from the clutches of the evil Miss Bitterman. Many celebrity guests including Whoopi Goldberg, David Arquette, Joan Cusack, and Matthew Lillard are on hand to help out, but the real stars here are The Muppets, who deliver unforgettable musical numbers like 'Moulin Scrooge'.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a Muppetful Life, 11 Dec 2003

The mortgage is coming due on the Muppet Theater. If Kermit and company can pull off a spectacular Christmas show, they’ll be able to buy it. Otherwise, it’ll fall to the evil Miss Bitterman who inherited the bank from her recently deceased father. She wants them to fail so she can demolish the theater for a trendy nightclub. When things go wrong on Christmas Eve, it looks like the gang will be separated for good.

Fortunately, their plight has caught the attention of an angel in Heaven. When God sends “DannyL” down to help, Kermit wishes he’d never been born. The results surprise him. But how can his revelation that he does matter help them out of their situation?

If you think the plot of this movie sounds like another Christmas movie, you’d be correct. Still, the gang manages to keep us entertained through the entire story with a fantastic show at the theater and with Fozzie’s hilarious attempts to get the money to the bank on time to name a couple fun moments. Some of the jokes will go over kid’s heads, but will make adults laugh out loud. There seems to be a bit too much sexual humor, usually involving Joan Cusack’s Miss Bitterman character. Most of it will go over kid’s heads, but why it needed to be there in a kid’s movie is beyond me. Speaking of whom, Ms. Cusack is over the top, but in a fun, campy performance that does fit the movie. David Arquette is a tad bumbling as DannyL, but Whoopi is enjoyable as God. And there are more cameos then you can shake a stick at.

I guess my biggest complaint with the movie is that it’s not as funny as I was expecting. They take parts of the story quite seriously without the trademark gags and puns we expect from the Muppets. Still, it’s a fun Christmas movie that will be enjoyed for years to come.

2.0 out of 5 stars Average but not Muppet material, 13 Jan 2004
By flutterby_24 (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
I am a huge fan of the muppets so I ordered this the minute I realised that it was out, when I watched it I was really disapointed at the few funny jokes there where and how the plot line seemed feeble and weak, not worthy of the muppets, the ending wasn't right for me and didn't even seem to make sense (you make up your own mind about this remark if you ever watch it)

The basic plot line is that the morgage payment is due on the muppet theatre and Kermit and his friends will be evicted by the evil banker if it isn't paid in time.

This only gets 2 stars from me because it was very very bad compared to the earlier films by the muppets, this one to me seemed like a way to just squeese money out of the franchise without a thought towards the plot line.

This isn't a bad movie to watch but if you are a muppets fan I'd recommend you stick to the muppets christmas carol.

1.0 out of 5 stars A great disappointment, 26 Dec 2003
When I ordered this DVD I expected a Muppets movie as witty and ingenious as the Muppets Christmas Carol. The disappointment was great, the story is boring, there are almost no gags. I rate this DVD with one star for the two or three times we had to laugh.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's a Very Less-Than-Average Muppet Christmas Movie!
Forget The Muppet's A Christmas Carol. This is very far removed from it! It's a TV movie rather than a feature film so perhaps the comparison is a little unfair. Read more

I wasn't expecting too much of this movie after the woeful 'Muppets family christmas'.
